Softball Falls to #13 Oregon and Pacific Sunday

Stockton, Calif.-On Sunday, the San Jose State softball team dropped a pair of games at the Libby Matson Invitational as the Spartans lost to #13 Oregon, 6-0, and host Pacific 12-9.

Against Oregon, the Spartans were limited to just three hits, a single by Alex Stange in the fourth and singles by Jessica Garcia and Cheryl Freitas in the sixth.  Elyssa Fox pitched four innings and allowed five runs, three earned, and struck out three as her record fell to 2-3.

The Spartan bats came alive against Pacific with 11 hits and scored nine runs.  San Jose State struck first in the game with four runs in the second inning.  Stange drew a walk to start the inning and eventually scored on a throwing error.  With two outs, Britney Helm homered to left field to score Jacqueline Zepeda and Amanda Schatz.

San Jose State was then held scoreless until the fifth inning.  Unfortunately, Pacific scored two runs in the second, one in the third and seven in the fourth to take a 10-4 lead.  The Spartans cut the lead to 10-7 in the fifth with three runs in the inning.  Sadie Coenen scored on a Breanna Lopez sacrifice fly, Schatz drove in Jessica Garcia with a double, and Stange scored on an Annica Wolfe sacrifice play.

However, Pacific scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 12-7.  San Jose State responded with a run in the sixth, Britney Helm home run to left fid, and a run in the seventh, Wolf home run to right center.

Three pitchers saw action in the game for the Spartans.  Jennifer Ames started the game and went three innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs.  Janessa Gutierrez pitchd the next 1.1 innings, allowing eight hits and nine runs, only three earned, while Fox pitched the last 1.2 innings and allowed just two hits.

San Jose State is now 8-7 on the season.  Up next for the Spartans is the Eller Media Stadium Classic in Las Vegas next weekend.  The Spartans face Bradley and Kansas on Friday, San Diego and Troy on Saturday and host UNLV on Sunday.
