San Jose-Alex Stange hit a game-winning double to drive in two runs in the bottom of the seventh of game two Friday afternoon to give the San Jose State softball team a 4-3 win over CSU Bakersfield at SJSU Field. The Roadrunners won the earlier game 4-1.
The Spartans trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs, San Jose State got back-to-back singles from Jessica Garcia and Annica Wolfe. After a walk to Breanna Lopez loaded the bases, Stange came to the plate and drove a 2-2 pitch to right center field for the double, driving in two runs and giving San Jose State the 4-3 win.
"That moment is why we play the game, the bases loaded and a favorable count," said Stange. "I expect myself to come through in those situations. But, you don't get into those situations if the rest of the people in front of you don't get on base. It was team effort for everyone to get on base before I got my hit."
After Bakersfield scored a run in the top of the fifth inning, San Jose State responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs, one as Jessica Garcia was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Vanessa House and the other as Sadie Coenen was walked to drive in Markesha Collins. However, the Roadrunners responded in the top of the sixth with two run to take a 3-2.
"We did not play well today and gave them opportunities," said Spartan head coach Peter Turner. "Bakersfield made us work for our opportunities. We need to get better at not giving up runs to our opponents the next half inning after we score runs and take leads. I am happy for Alex and for the hard-earned win."
Pitcher Amanda Pridmore pitched a complete game in picking up her fourth win of the season. She allowed three runs on six hits and struck out six while walked three.
In the first game of the day, San Jose State scored its only run on a Lopez home run to center field to lead off the sixth inning. Lopez also had a double for the Spartans. Jennifer Ames suffered the loss, and Allison Lang struck out three in four innings of relief work.
The two teams will play another doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon at SJSU Field, located on the corner of Alma and Senter Streets, across from Municipal Stadium.
