Softball Ends Weekend 6-0 With Sweep Of Broncos

San Jose-Hitting, pitching and defense all worked for the Spartans on Sunday as San Jose State swept Santa Clara in a doubleheader, 2-1 and 8-0 in five innings, in the Spartans home opener at SJSU Field.  The Spartans ended the weekend with a 6-0 record and are now 8-4 on the season.

The Spartans recorded 19 hits between the two games.  Timely hitting was also key to the wins, especially in game one when BranDee Garcia singled to second base to score Britney Helm in the bottom of the seventh inning to give San Jose State the win.  Garcia, Jessica Garcia and Alex Stange each had two hits in the win.

Game two featured 11 hits, led by BranDee Garcia with three.  Helm and Annica Wolf each had two hits and four others recorded a hit.  Leading 7-0 headed into the fifth inning, the Spartans loaded the bases with three straight singles before Cheryl Freitas hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Markesha Collins and end the game.

Pitching was also big for San Jose State this weekend as Jennifer Ames and Elyssa Fox each went 2-0 including wins on Sunday.  Ames pitched game one and allowed just three hits and one earned run but walked five batters with one strikeout.  Fox pitched game two and allowed just three hits in her first shutout of the season.  She struck out four and did not walk a batter.

"Today I would give myself a "C" because I had too many walks," said Ames.  "My defense helped me out a lot and having a good defense really helps.  The offense also helped me during the game, especially after a few miscues by me."

Defense was also key for the Spartans Sunday as the team did not commit and error in either game.  The Spartan were also able to hold Santa Clara scoreless in the top of the first inning of game two after the first two Bronco hitters reached base.

"This has been a perfect weekend for us," said Spartan head coach Peter Turner.  "We did make some mistakes but limited them.  I am really happy with our pitching, hitting and defense.  All three worked really well together.  Our pitching and defense was great and we had some timely hits.  This is just a good group of young ladies playing together."

San Jose State next plays at the Libby Matson Tournament at the University of the Pacific this Friday and Saturday.  The Spartans face Oregon and Pacific on Friday and Oregon and Santa Clara on Saturday.
