Las Vegas-The Spartan softball bats came alive on Sunday with school-record breaking 20 hits as San Jose State defeated Idaho, 10-4, at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.
The Spartans broke the oldest school records on the book with the 20 hits against the Bengals. The team broke the record of 18 set against Oregon on March 26, 1986.
Seven Spartans had multiple-hits in Sunday's game, led by Michelle Cox who went 4-for-5 from the plate and drove in two runs. Markesha Collins and Vanessa House each had three hits on the day including a three-run home run by House in the second inning to start the Spartan scoring. Four others had two hits in the game - Jessica Garcia, Annica Wolfe, Alex Stange and Nicole Schultz.
San Jose State scored three runs in the second, all from House's home run, then broke it open with six runs in the fifth and added a run in the sixth inning. The team also left 11 runners on base in the win.
In the circle, Jennifer Ames recorded her first win of the season as she struck out five and allowed only four hits in the game.
San Jose State opens the home portion of the schedule this week with five games. The team hosts Sacramento State this Wednesday with a single game at 2:30 p.m. The Spartans then host Cal State Bakersfield for doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday at 12 p.m. All five games will be played at SJSU Field, located on the corner of Alma and Senter Streets, across the street from Municipal Stadium.
