Softball Completes Four-Game Sweep

Bakersfield, Calif.-Freshmen pitching and 24 hits in two games helped the San Jose State softball team sweep a doubleheader at Cal State Bakersfield Saturday afternoon.  The Spartans won 6-2 and 8-0 to complete the four-game sweep to improve their record to 6-4.

Janessa Gutierrez pitched the first game of the day for the Spartans.  She pitched her second complete game of the season and improved her record to 2-0.  Gutierrez allowed two earned runs and struck out two while not walking a batter.

Alex Molina made her first collegiate start in game two.  In her first complete game, she held the Roadrunners to just three hits in seven innings while pitching San Jose State's first shutout of the season.  Molina struck out two and walked two in facing 26 batters.

The Spartans started the day with their offense, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning of game one. Britney Helm drew a walk to start the game and scored as BranDee Garcia doubled to right center.  Garcia then scored on a Breanna Lopez sacrifice fly to center field.

Cal State Bakersfield tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning, and the two teams were scoreless until the top of the sixth inning.

San Jose State proceeded to score four runs in the inning.  The Spartans loaded the bases as three of the first four batters of the inning reached base.  Sadie Coenen scored the go-ahead run on a Loepz single to center field.  Jessica Garcia drew a bases-loaded walk to score Jacqueline Zepeda from third.  After a pitching change, Alex Stange hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score BranDee Garcia.  Stange ended the game 3-for-3 at the plate.

The Spartans then had a season-high 13 hits in game two.  Key hits for San Jose State included doubles by Helm, to get on base, and Cheryl Freitas to score the only run in the fifth inning and eventual game winner.  Amanda Schatz hit her first collegiate home run to drive in two runs the team's seven-run seventh inning. Dorothy Morentin, Cristina Menjivar and Jacqueline Zepeda each recorded their first collegiate hit during the game.

Pending weather and field conditions, the Spartans are scheduled to host a doubleheader against Santa Clara Sunday at SJSU Field beginning at 12 noon.  Please check the Spartan website Sunday morning for any changes to the schedule.  Updates will also be posted on Twitter at #SJSUAthletics.
