Las Vegas-Markesha Collins hit just her second career home run Saturday, but she made it a memorable one to help the San Jose State softball team to a 9-1 win over UC Riverside in six innings. The Spartans fell to #1 Calfornia in the first game of the day, 7-0, at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas.
Collins' memorable home run, a grand slam, helped San Jose State break open the game against UC Riverside in the fourth inning. Leading 2-0 after three, the Spartans scored five runs in the inning. Breanna Lopez started the Spartans with a single and was pinch run for by Lauren Shanks. After Alex Stange reached on a fielding error and an out, Nicole Schultz singled to left to load the bases. Vanessa House then singled through the left side to score Shanks from third.
Collins then came to the plate with the bases full of Spartans. Working the count full, she homered to right field to clear the bases and give San Jose State a 7-0 lead.
The Spartans added runs in the fifth and sixth innings in the win. In the fifth, Lopez scored on a Schultz infield single. Michelle Cox started the sixth with a triple and scored on a Jessica Garcia sacrifice fly to right field.
Spartan pitcher Amanda Pridmore improved her record to 2-3 with four strikeouts in six innings pitched.
In the earlier game, San Jose State had just two hits by Collins and Lopez against top-ranked California in a 7-0 loss. It was the second consecutive weekend the Spartans played the top-ranked team.
Pridmore pitched the first four innings of the game and struck out one, while Allison Lang pitched the final three innings and struck out two.
