Softball Loses Two On Friday

Las Vegas, Nev.-The San Jose State softball team tried its luck in Las Vegas but came up short in both games Friday at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.  The Spartans took early leads in both games but fell to Utah 3-1 and Ohio State 6-3.

Against Utah, Cheryl Freitas hit her first home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning to give San Jose State the early 1-0 lead.  However, Utah responded in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run home run by Whitney Holm to take a 2-1 lead.  The Utes added a run in the top of the sixth inning on a Holm sacrifice fly.

The Spartans had a chance to score in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Breanna Lopez started the inning by reaching on a Utah error.  Alex Stange then singled to center to put pinch runner Lauren Shanks at second.  However, the two runners were stranded on base as the Spartans popped out, flied out and struck out to end the inning.

Spartan pitcher Amanda Pridmore struck out six in her fourth complete game of the season.

In the afternoon game against the Buckeyes, San Jose State took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.  Lopez started the inning by drawing a walk and moved to third on an Alex Stange double to right center.  Lopez then scored on a BranDee Garcia infield single.  Stange eventually scored on an Amanda Schatz single up the middle.

The Spartans loaded the bases after Vanessa House and Britney Helm drew walks.  After an Ohio State pitching change, the Spartans were unable to push across any more runs.

In the San Jose State fifth, Helm and Cox each reached base to start the inning.  After two consecutive line outs, Lopez walked to load the bases, but Stange grounded out to end the inning.

Jennifer Ames pitched the first four innings of the game as her record fell to 0-3.  She struck out three and walked one while in the circle.  Pridmore then pitched two innings of relief and struck out three.  Allison Lang got the final two outs of the seventh for the Spartans.

San Jose State continues at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic Saturday with games against #1/3 California at 9:00 a.m., and UC Riverside at 1:30 p.m.   The Spartans play Idaho State Sunday at 11:15 a.m.
