After opening the 2011 season in Arizona last weekend, the Spartan softball team will spend the next two weeks playing games in California. Pending the weather, San Jose State plans to play four games at Cal State Bakersfield on Friday and Saturday before returning to SJSU Field on Sunday for a doubleheader against Santa Clara.
The Spartans enter the weekend with a 2-4 record after defeating Ole Miss and Appalachian State at the Kajikawa Classic last weekend. Pitcher Jennifer Ames ended the tournament with a 2.19 ERA with a 1-2 record in four appearances. She struck out seven in 22.1 innings pitched and picked up a save against Appalachian State.
Alex Stange and Annica Wolfe each hit .333 in five games played. Stange had five hits and two runs scored, while Wolfe had four hits including a home run. BranDee Garcia has a .316 batting average with six hits, four runs, three RBI, a double and a home run. Stephanie Ziemann hit .294 with five hits with two doubles and a home run, while Britney Helm and Cheryle Freitas each recorded four hits and four runs scored. Freitas leads the team with two home runs and six RBI.
Cal State Bakersfield enters the weekend with a 0-5 record as they also played at the Kajikawa Classic last week. The two teams both played Ole Miss, the Spartans winning 3-2, but the Roadrunners losing 9-1 in five innings. CS Bakersfield went 11 innings with North Texas before losing 8-4.
After four games in Bakersfield, the Spartans return home for a doubleheader against Santa Clara Sunday at 12 noon at SJSU Field. The Broncos will be playing their first games of the season on Sunday.
Fans can purchase tickets to the Santa Clara game at the gate. Adults are $5 each, while youth 12 and under are $3 a piece. SJSU Field is located on the corner of Alma and Senter Roads, across the street from Municipal Stadium.
