Spartans Outhit Rebels In 2-1 Loss

Las Vegas, Nev. ----- The San Jose State University softball team outhit UNLV, 8-to-2, but did not overcome an early deficit as the Spartans lost, 2-1, in the first game of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.

"We outplayed them and got the hits, but we were unable to outscore them," said head coach Peter Turner. "We did not get the clutch hit and, sometimes, that is what happens."

The Rebels (3-3) opened scoring in the first inning when Taylor Aleman hit her seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot to left center.

In the fifth inning, San Jose State (4-3) cut UNLV's lead in half when BranDee Garcia scored on an unearned run. With the bases loaded, Jessica Garcia hit a ball that the Rebels' shortstop bobbled, allowing Garcia to score from third.

Vanessa House went 3-for-3, and the team's leading hitter (.550 batting average), Markesha Collins, was 2-for-4. Said Turner of the two seniors, "House has been moving the ball well. Both she and Markesha (Collins) are on fire."

In the circle for the Spartans, Amanda Pridmore (3-3) allowed one hit after Aleman's homer while striking out five.

San Jose State takes on #20/19 Hawai'i tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. and Utah Valley at 3:45 p.m. "Tomorrow, we need to play the same way we played," Turner said. "We played well today. We just did not get the win."
