Softball In Las Vegas For Marucci Desert Classic

San Jose, Calif. - The San José State softball team enters its second weekend of the 2018 season with a 4-1 record and five games scheduled in the Marucci Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nevada.

SJSU plays Idaho State, South Dakota, Bradley, Florida International and Iowa State over three days (February 16-18).

SJSU's games against Idaho State, South Dakota and Iowa State, on Friday and Sunday, are scheduled to be played in Eller Media Stadium (on the southeast corner of Swenson Street and Harmon Avenue). Saturday's games against Bradley and Florida International are scheduled to be played at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park (1725 Galleria Drive, Henderson, Nev., 89014).

Opponent Previews

Idaho State Bengals (0-0)
This will be Idaho State's first game of the season. The Bengals finished last season 18-27, 8-11 in Big Sky Conference play and did not participate in the postseason.

Haley Harrison batted .346 in 2017 and returns as the squads top hitter. Ashlyn Ames was the leading run producer with 39 RBIs.

In the circle, Ames returns as the team's most accomplished pitcher. In 2017, she was 10-15, with 97 strikeouts in 157.2 innings and posted a team-best 3.60 ERA.

The Spartans hold a 6-1 advantage in the all-time series. The teams were scheduled to play last season in this tournament, but the game was called off due to rain.

South Dakota Coyotes (0-6)
South Dakota finished last season 22-32, 10-8 in Summit League play and did not participate in the postseason. Last week, they went 0-6 in the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Arizona, including a 16-12 loss to San José State.

Taylor Steinfeldt is batting .500 and leads the team with two triples. Alyssa Fernandez is the top run producer with eight RBI and also leads the team with four home runs.

In the circle, South Dakota's lowest ERA among its starters is 8.40 and belongs to Alexis Devers (0-3). She also leads the team with seven strikeouts in 11.2 innings.

The only meeting between these two programs, a 16-12 Spartans win, came last weekend in the Kajikawa Classic.

Bradley Braves (3-2)
Bradley finished last season 21-32, 7-19 in Missouri Valley Conference play and did not participate in the postseason. Last week, they went 3-2 in the Peterson Hotels Invitational in Peoria, Illinois.

Maria Schroeder is batting .400 and leads the team with four RBIs. Kealia Wysocki has the squad's lone home run, three RBIs and is batting .308.

In the circle, Julie Kestas is 2-0 with a 3.20 ERA. In 15.1 innings of work she has struck out 17 batters.

This will be the third meeting between these to programs. In 2011, the Braves won the first matchup 3-1 and in 2014, SJSU returned the favor with an 8-4 victory.

Florida International Panthers (2-4)
FIU finished last season 44-12, 17-6 in Conference USA play and posted a 1-2 record in the NCAA Gainesville Regional. Last week they went 2-4 in their own Felsberg Invitational.

Jackie Schoff is batting .500 with team-highs of three runs and nine hits. Kasandra Castle is the team's top run producer driving in five of the team's 11 runs last weekend.

In the circle, Shannon Saile went 2-1 last week with an 0.95 ERA. In three complete games, covering 22.0 innings, she struck out 40 batters.

The Spartans and Panthers have met just one time, in 2008, which resulted in a 2-1 victory for the San José State.

Iowa State Cyclones (2-3)
Iowa State finished last season 23-35, 6-12 in Big 12 play and did not participate in the postseason. Last week, they went 2-3 in the Kickin' Chicken Classic in Conway, South Carolina.

Talyn Lewis leads the team with a .444 batting average. She is one of three batters who have hit a home run. Sami Williams leads the Cyclones with five RBIs.

In the circle, Brianna Weilbacher and Emma Hylen are each 1-1 and have 3.00 and 3.23 ERAs, respectively. In last season's 4-1 SJSU win over Iowa State, Weilbacher was the Cyclones' pitcher of record.

This will be the fourth meeting between the Spartans and Cyclones. SJSU holds a 3-0 lead in the all time series, including a 4-1 win in last year's UC Davis Tournament.
