Freshmen Play Big Role In Softball Win Saturday

Tempe, Ariz.-The Spartans got a split of games Saturday at the Kajikawa Classic as San Jose State defeated Appalachian State, 4-3, but fell to Portland State, 5-3.

Freshmen were key in the Spartans win over Appalachian State Saturday morning.  Britney Helm scored the first San Jose State run of the game in the bottom of the first and had two hits.  Annica Wolfe scored the third Spartan run of the game with her first collegiate home run, a shot to left field, and finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate.  Pitcher Janessa Gutierrez recorded her first collegiate win as she pitched 4.1 innings, allowing three earned runs and six hits but struck out four and walked just one. 

After giving up two runs in the top of the first inning, the first two Spartan batters got a run on the board as Helm singled then scored no a BranDee Garcia double.  Garcia then scored on freshman Jessica Garcia's single up the middle.

San Jose State answered with single runs in the second and third innings to take a 4-2 lead.  Wolfe's home run was the run scored in the second inning, while Cheryl Freitas scored on a Stephanie Ziemann double in the third inning.

Against Portland State, the Spartans started the game with two runs in the bottom of the first inning for the early 2-0 lead.  Helm and BranDee Garcia scored on a fly ball to right field hit by Freitas but dropped by the Vikings fielder.

Portland State took advantage of two Spartan errors in the third inning to score three unearned runs in taking a 3-2 lead.  San Jose State responded in the bottom of the inning as Freitas led off the inning with a home run to left field.  The Vikings then scored single runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings for the win.

Pitcher Jennifer Ames pitched a complete game for the Spartans as her record fell to 1-2 on the year.  After pitching 2.2 innings of relief against Appalachian State for her first save of the year, Ames allowed 13 hits and five runs, two earned, against the Vikings.  She struck out five and did not walk a batter.

San Jose State is now 2-3 on the season and takes on host #10 Arizona State Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. MST/12:30 p.m. PST.
