Tempe-The Spartan softball team dropped a pair of games at the Kajikawa Classic Friday. The team lost a heartbreaker in the bottom of the seventh to Cal State Northridge, 9-8, then lost to Nebraska later in the afternoon, 7-3.
After falling behind 5-0 after one inning to the Matadors, San Jose State scored single runs in the second and third innings. Stephanie Ziemann contributed to both Spartan runs. She led off the second inning with her first collegiate home run to center field. In the third inning, Cheryl Freitas scored on a Ziemann single up the middle.
San Jose State then continued their comeback in the sixth inning. Freshman Sadie Coenen led off the inning with a single and was pinch ran for by Britney Helm. Helm advanced to third on an Alex Stange single through the right side. Helm and Stange scored as Freitas hit her first home run of the season to center field to tie the game at 5-5.
Cal State Northridge took the lead again in the bottom of the inning with two runs, but the Spartans did not give up fighting in the top of the seventh inning. Lauren Shanks, pinch running for Cristina Menjivar, scored on a Nikki Chapman single to left field to tie the game at 7-7. San Jose State then took an 8-7 lead as Stange singled to left field to score Markesha Collins who was pinch running for Chapman.
The Matadors got the first two batters on base in the bottom of the seventh inning. With runners at second and third, Spartan pitcher Elyssa Fox gave up a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 8-8. After a walk, she got the next batter to fly out to left field before giving up a double that scored the game-winning run.
Fox took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season as she pitched six innings in relief of starter Janessa Gutierrez who was making her Spartan debut. Unfortunately, her debut was limited to two-thirds of an inning of work as Gutierrez gave up five runs, four earned, on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Fox struck out six and walked five during her time in the circle.
Against Nebraska, the Spartans went down 1-0 after the top of the first, but rallied in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. Collins led off the game with a walk and eventually scored on a Jessica Garcia single up the middle. Coenen, who also drew a walk earlier in the inning, scored as Ziemann drove in her third run of the day.
The Huskers tied the game in the top of the third inning, but San Jose State came back in the bottom of the third as Jessica Garcia scored on a BranDee Garcia single to center field. However, that was the last run that the Spartans would score in the game as Nebraska scored three times in the fifth and once in the sixth and seventh innings.
Spartan pitcher Jennifer Ames went 5.2 innings, giving up 10 hits and six runs, four earned, while striking out two and walking one. Gutierrez pitched 1.1 innings in relief and struck out two while allowing two hits and an earned run.
San Jose State continues play at the Kajikawa Classic Saturday with games against Appalachian State at 8:30 a.m. PST, and Portland State at 11 a.m. PST.
