Tempe, Ariz-Michelle Cox had her first two-hit game, and Markesha Collins drove in two runs for the San Jose State softball team in the first game Friday at the Kajikawa Classic. The Spartans fell to #12 Washington 9-4.
Cox, playing in just her second game in a Spartan uniform, recorded her first collegiate hit with a double to center field in the third inning. Cox also led off the seventh inning with a single to short. For the game, she was 2-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base.
Collins drove in the two Spartan runs in the bottoms of the seventh with a single to left field.
Three others had hits for the Spartans - Jessica Garcia, Annica Wolfe and Cheryl Freitas. Garcia singled to center in the fifth to drive in one of the two San Jose State runs that inning.
Pitcher Jennifer Ames pitched four innings in the loss. She struck out three. Freshman Allison Lang made her Spartan debut with three innings pitched, allowing two hits and one run while striking out one.
San Jose State plays tonight at approximately 8:30 p.m. Mountain against Cal Poly. The game could start later due to delays on the field.
