San Jose, Calif. --- Jessie Hufstetler's 2-run blast in the bottom of the sixth inning put the nail in New Mexico's coffin and sent the Spartans home early with a 9-0 win in game two of the Mountain West series.
Hufstetler's 11th home run of the year, which carried over the wall in left-center field, was her second hit of the game from the cleanup spot. The first four hitters in the order combined for 10 of San José State's 13 hits against Lobos pitching.
Brittany Abacherli and Alyssa Martinez finished with three hits a piece for San José State (27-24, 16-7 MW).
Behind a potent Spartans office was a solid pitching performance by Colette Riggs (9-4). The junior went 6.0 innings allowing three hits, three walks and struck out four.
With a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth, Riggs allowed a leadoff walk, but induced a groundball double-play and struck out the next batter.
The only true Lobos (23-26, 8-14 MW) threat came in the fifth after a two-out walk followed by a single. But again, Riggs pitched out of it by getting Michala Erickson to pop out to the shortstop.
New Mexico's Tess McPherson (4-3) allowed five earned runs on eight hits in the loss. She was lifted in the fifth after Taylor Purdy's RBI-single put SJSU up 5-0. Colette Robert came on in relief only to allow four more runs, including Hufstetler's bomb to seal the deal.
The Spartans will go for a sweep on Saturday, the final day of the regular season. The program will celebrate the careers of nine seniors following the game.
