Fort Collins, Colo.—Big scoring innings for San José State and Colorado State led to high scoring Mountain West games Friday afternoon in Fort Collins. The Rams won the first game 7-4, and the Spartans lead the second contest 9-6, before the game was called due to darkness. The game will resume Saturday at 10 a.m. MT before the series finale.
In the first game, San José State jumped out to a 1-0 in the top of the first as Jessie Hufstetler hit her 14th double of the season to drive in Devin Caldwell. Colorado State responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs but left the bases loaded with a 2-1 lead. The Rams added a run in the third for a 3-1 lead.
The Spartans had a big fifth inning, scoring three runs and retaking the lead at 4-3. Casey Watt started the inning with a double to right. After Caldwell struck out, Michelle Cox singled to advance Watt to third. Jessica Garcia drew a walk to load the bases, and Hufstetler also drew a walk to score Watt. Alyssa Martinez was hit by a pitch for the first time this season to drive in Cox. Sharon-Renae Estrada then hit into a fielder’s choice as Meyer scored on an error by the Ram catcher.
The Rams then had their own big inning in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs on three hits and one error. Colorado State got two hits and a bases-loaded walk to score the runs and take the 7-4 win.
Spartan pitcher Katelyn Linford started the game and pitched 3.2 innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs. She struck out two of her 20 batters faced. Berlyn Rippentrop got her only batter faced out in the fourth inning. Allison Lang pitched the final two innings as her record fell to 10-5 on the season as she allowed four runs, three earned, and struck out two.
The two teams again had big scoring innings in the second game before darkness suspended the game. The Spartans started the scoring with two runs in the top of the second inning. Hufstetler drewa walk and was pinch ran for by Jessie Meyer, who advanced to second on an Erin Rodriguez ground out. With two outs, Kryn Masutani drove in Meyer and scored on a Taylor Purdy double to right field.
The Rams then responded in the bottom of the inning by loading the bases, and Haley Hutton hit a grand slam to give Colorado State the 4-2 lead.
But the Spartans rose up and responded by scoring three runs in third and fifth innings and a run in the fourth. In the third, Masutani drove in a run, and Chelsea Jenner drove in two runs to give San José State a 5-4 lead. Kailene Begonia, pinch running for Garcia in the fourth, scored on a Nicole Schultz ground out to extend the SJSU lead to 6-4.
After a rain delay in the bottom of the fourth, the Rams scored two runs to tie the game at 6-6. With two outs in the fifth, Garcia scored Watt on a single to right field, and Hufstetler showed why she is the MW’s top hitter as she drove in two more runs to extend the Spartan lead to 9-6. Because of the earlier rain delay, darkness set in, and game two was called after five innings. The game will resume Saturday at 10 a.m. MT/9 a.m. PT with the series finale to start 30 minutes after the conclusion of the suspended game.
