San Jose, Calif. – Senior Jessica Garcia set the San José State University softball team’s single-season RBI record with a three-run homer in an 8-3 Mountain West loss to San Diego State on Friday.
Garcia’s team-leading 10th blast of the year came in the opening frame. With Devin Caldwell and Michelle Cox on base following lead-off singles, Garcia sent the ball flying over the fence at left center for the 3-1 San José State lead. Her three-run long ball gave Garcia 52 RBI on the year, a school record.
But the Aztecs (35-16, 12-7 MW) scored seven runs in the final four innings for the 8-3 win.
In the Mountain West Conference standings, the Spartans (27-22, 10-9 MW) remain in sixth place.
After the first inning, San Diego State pitcher Danielle O’Toole gave up one hit and retired 17 of the final 18 batters she faced.
Katelyn Linford’s record fell to 9-12 after 4.0 innings of work. She scattered nine hits, allowed four earned runs and walked two. In three innings of relief, Madison Fish allowed two earned runs on six hits, issuing three walks with one strikeout.
