April 30, 2017

Final Stats

Albuquerque, N.M. - On Sunday, the San José State Spartans pounded out 29 hits and scored 17 runs in a two-game Mountain West Conference sweep of the New Mexico Lobos. With the wins, the Spartans softball team completed a three game series sweep. Of the team's 17 runs, 15 came in three of 14 innings.

The Spartans (32-15, 12-6) today, in combination with Utah State's loss, are tied with the Aggies for first place in the loss column, and will host USU in a critical three-game series on May 5-7 at Mission College

SAN JOSÉ STATE 10, NEW MEXICO 1 - GAME 1

The Spartans scored six runs in the first and four in the seventh en route to a 10-1 victory.

The first two batters of the game, Emma Entzminger (1-for-4, R) and Casey Watt led off with a walk and single, respectively. Cassidy Clark (4-for-5, 2R, 4RBI, 2B, HR) then took a 1-2 offering from Lobos starter Jensen Main and drove it out over the left field fence. It was her second homer of the season and before the seats were warm SJSU had a 3-0 lead.

Following the homer, the Spartans strung together three successive singles to load the bases and end the day for Main. Two batters later, Alyssa Avila (1-for-4, 2RBI) singled in two runs to make it 5-0. Entzminger came up again, among 11 batters sent to the plate in the frame, and ripped a shot to short. The fielder misplayed the ball allowing the sixth run of the inning to score.

SJSU starter Katelyn Linford gave up the only run the Lobos got in the bottom of the third. After getting groundouts on the first two batters, she induced another and should have been out of the inning. But Clark couldn't handle the ball, which allowed the inning to continue. New Mexico strung together three singles, the last of which drove in an unearned run and made it 6-1.

Linford would go on to pitch a complete game five hitter to improve to 20-7 on the year. She is the first Spartans' pitcher since Amanda Pridmore in 2013, to record 20 wins in a season. That year Pridmore won 29 games.

The score remained 6-1 until the seventh. Casey Watt (2-for-5, 2R) got a one-out single and Clark drove her in with a double to left. Three batters later, with Clark on second and Georgia Blair (4-for-5, R) on first, Chelsea Jenner (2-for-5, R, RBI) singled and drove in Clark to make it 8-1. Brittany Abacherli (1-for-3, R, RBI) then singled to left, scoring Blair from third. Kaelin Amrein, who was running for Jenner, also scored on a fielding error by the left fielder to make it 10-1.

The Spartans pounded out 19 hits, a season-high, but left 13 runners on base in the victory. With runners on, SJSU was 12-for-29 (.414) and were 8-for-22 (.364) with runners in scoring position.

SAN JOSÉ STATE 7, NEW MEXICO 2 - GAME 2

The Spartans used a five-run sixth inning to bust open a 2-1 game and competed the three-game sweep with a 7-2 victory.

In the first, Emma Entzminger led off with a shot to right field, which the fielder misplayed into a three-base error and the Spartans were set up with a runner on third. Three batters later with Entzminger on third and Cassidy Clark on first, Georgia Blair (1-for-3, RBI) singled to right to drive in the first run of the game.

The Lobos came right back in the bottom of the inning and tied the game. They got a one-out triple off starter Colette Riggs and two batters later scored on an RBI single.

SJSU doubled its lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Alexandra Luna (2-for-3, R) singled and Entzminger walked. Mackenzie Drake pinch ran for Luna at second and was driven in by Casey Watt's single up the middle.

In the sixth, the Spartans returned to the long ball to plate five runs. Chelsea Jenner (1-for-4, R) singled and Brittany Abacherli (2-for-3, R, 2RBI, HR) followed her with a bomb to left. It was her fourth round tripper of the year and made the score 4-1. Kristen Heffley walked followed by a Luna single setting Entzminger (1-for-3, 2R, 3RBI) up with two on. She hammered her first home run on the season, a three-run shot, to make it 7-1.

New Mexico scored a meaningless run in the bottom of the seventh for the final score of 7-2.

Riggs (9-3) tossed a complete game win, scattering eight hits and striking out six.
