Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. – Over the course of two games, the San José State softball team was held scoreless for 12 innings by Fresno State pitching before Madison Aurin laced a two-RBI double in the sixth on Saturday afternoon, but it was not enough in the Spartans 8-2 loss to the Bulldogs.

The Spartans’ (25-13, 9-4 MW) offense, which came into the series averaging just under six runs per game (5.94), has been stymied by a pair of Fresno State pitchers. On Saturday, it was Samantha Mejia (6-4) who scattered four hits until Aurin’s double, and has combined to hold SJSU to 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position over the course of two games.

After being held in check in the first two innings, Fresno State put up three runs in the third off Spartans’ starter Caroline Bowman (12-2). They got three hits, with the biggest being a two-RBI triple from Miranda Rohleder.

In the fourth the Bulldogs scored an unearned run on an RBI-double from Dominique Jackson and tacked on two more in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead. All six runs were charged to Bowman who went 4.2 innings and was lifted two outs in the fifth in favor of Desiree Severance.

Severance pitched into the seventh, a total of 2.0 innings, giving up four hits and two runs. With a runner on and two outs in the top of the seventh, Kacie Gresenz was brought in. She gave up a pair of walks, but ended the inning with a strike out.

The Spartans’ hitters were kept in check through the first three innings before getting singles from Cassidy Clark (2-for-3, R) and Brittany Abacherli (1-for-3) in the fourth, but a ground out ended the threat and the inning.

In the sixth, with one on and one out and trailing 6-0, Clark hit was appeared to be a simple single to right, but for the second day in a row Jackson, the Fresno State right fielder, committed an error. On Friday, a dropped fly ball didn’t hurt Fresno State, but she booted the ball on Saturday which allowed the SJSU base runners on advance to second and third. On a two-and-one pitch, Aurin (1-for-3, 2RBI) laced a double down the left field line, scoring both runners and cutting the lead to 6-2.

After a pop out, pinch hitter Kristin Heffley reached on a throwing error by Bulldogs shortstop Katie Castellon. SJSU had runners on the corners, but Makayla Englestad struck out to end the inning stranding the runners.

After Fresno State got the two runs back in the top of the seventh, the Spartans had one more chance to get back into the game. Rayohna Sagapolu (1-for-3) led off with a single, but was erased on a fielder’s choice. Kaelin Amrein (0-for-3, R) walked with two outs to put runners on first and second, but a Clark pop out to second ended the game and SJSU dropped its second game in the series.

The series wraps up on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at Mission College.
