Final Stats

Stockton, Calif. – Senior Katelyn Linford gave up a single to the second batter of the game and then set down 20 of the next 21 hitters, struck out a season high 11 and defeated the Nevada Wolf Pack 2-0 in both team’s Mountain West opener.

The Spartans (18-9, 1-0 MW), hosting the series at The University of the Pacific’s Bill Simoni Field, banged out eight hits, two each from Emma Entzminger and Madison Aurin, who also drove in the team’s two runs.

Linford, now 12-2 on the year, had at least one strikeout in every inning, including striking out the last five batters of the game to secure the win. She has eight complete games, including three shutouts and has five complete game wins in her last five starts.

After a groundout to leadoff the first, Nevada’s Aaliyah Gibson singled to right and moved into scoring position on another groundout. It would be the last runner in scoring position the Wolf Pack (14-11, 0-1 MW) would get. Linford ended the inning with her first strikeout of the game and then set down the next nine batters she faced.

In the top of the fifth, Nikki Orozco reached on a fielding error by Georgia Blair, but Linford induced a pair of fielder’s choice groundouts, both times cutting the lead runner down, and ended the inning on her sixth strikeout of the game.

With the bats, the Spartans had runners on in every inning, but were able to scratch out just a pair of runs.

The first threat came in the second inning. Blair (1-for-3) got a one-out single; two batters later Cassidy Clark (1-for-1, 2 BB) walked and Chelsea Jenner singled to short to load the bases. But Entzminger was unable to keep the rally going and the Spartans left all three on.

In the third, SJSU broke through with the first run of the game. Kristen Heffley (1-for-4) singled to open the inning and was lifted for pinch runner Makayla Englestad. One out later, Englestad stole second and two batters after that Aurin (2-for-3, RBI, 2 2B) doubled into the gap in right center scoring Englestad.

In the sixth San José State tacked on an insurance run. Chelsea Jenner (1-for-3, R) reached on a fielder choice and moved to second on a passed ball. Entzminger (2-for-3, RBI), the next batter, singled up the middle scoring Jenner.

From there Linford struck out the side in the seventh to secure the Spartans eighth straight victory.

The Spartans and Wolf Pack will play game two of the three game series on Saturday at noon.
