Final Stats

Fullerton, Calif. – No. 16 Ohio State scored a run in the seventh to tie the game and three more in the eighth to defeat the San José State softball team 6-3 on the final day of the 2018 Louisville Slugger Invitational.

With SJSU (15-9) in front 3-2 heading into the top of the seventh, Ohio State leadoff batter Ashley Goodwin reached base safely on an error by shortstop Emma Entzminger.   A double moved Goodwin to third, and a walk to the next batter loaded the bases.

Madison Aurin, who entered the circle with two outs in the sixth, struck out the next two Buckeyes, but hit the third to force in the tying run. The Spartans got a one-out single from Alyssa Avila (1-for-2) in the bottom of the inning, but she was doubled off first on a comebacker to the pitcher and the game went to an international tiebreaker.

With a runner on second to start the top of the eight, the Buckeyes (13-1) got a two-run homer from Lilli Piper to take a 5-3 lead. The next batter doubled and two batters later, with a runner on third, Shelby McCombs singled in the third run of the inning to make it 6-3.

In the last of the eighth, with Entzminger came up with a chance to extend the inning, but struck out ended the game.

The Spartans managed just five hits on the day, and after solo homers from Piper in the first and McCombs in the second, found themselves down 2-0 heading to the third.

Rayohna Sagapolu (0-for-2, R) walked to open the bottom of the third and three batters later, with Sagapolu on third, Kaelin Amrein (0-for-4, RBI) grounded out to short to drive in the first SJSU run of the game.

In the fourth, the Spartans tacked on two more runs to take a 3-2 lead. Aurin led off with a walk and the next batter, Abacherli (1-for-4, R, 2RBI, HR), hit an opposite field two-run homer, her third of the season. It gave SJSU a 3-2 lead, which it held until the seventh.

Caroline Bowman started the game for San José State and went 5.1 innings. She gave up three hits and two runs, both earned, before Aurin came on. Aurin, who took the loss and is now 5-7, surrendered four runs, two earned, on four hits in 2.2 innings.
