Hawai'i Final Stats

Honolulu, Hawai'i - The San Jose State softball team wrapped up the final day of the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament with a 6-2 win over the Longwood University Lancers and 6-3 defeat at the hands of the tournament's host, the Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine.

Jessie Hufstetler and Taylor Purdy were name to the All-Tournament Team.  In five games, Hufstetler went 6-for-12 with 6 RBI, 2 home runs and a pair of runs.  Purdy played in four games and was 4-for-11 with 2 RBI and two runs scored.

The Spartans (14-6) went 2-3 in Hawai'i.  It is the first time in four tournaments this season that San José State failed to win four games in a weekend.

Game 1 vs. Longwood

Madison Fish pitched a complete game in earning her seventh win of the season.  She scattered five hits, struck out seven Lancers and gave up one walk

One of the two runs Fish gave up came on a two-out RBI double in the top of the first.  But the Spartans got the run right back in the bottom of the frame.  Michelle Cox (1-for-2, 2R) led off with a walk.  Jessica Madrid, the next batter, doubled to left, which moved Cox to third.  Jessie Hufstetler's sacrifice fly to center scored Cox.  Hufstetler would finish the game 1-for-2 with two RBI.

With two-outs in the top of the third, Fish hit a batter and then gave up a single to set the Lancers up with runners on first and third.  A fielding error by Sharon-Renae Estrada allowed the runner to score from third and put Longwood (2-8) back up by a run, 2-1.

In the bottom of the third, Estrada earned a one-out walk and moved to second after Alyssa Martinez singled to center.  Brittany Abacherli came in to run for Estrada and the bases were loaded after Erin Rodriguez walked.

Taylor Purdy (2-for-3, 2 RBI) unloaded them with a single down the left field line scoring Abacherli and Martinez.  The Spartans led 3-2 after three.

In the fourth, San José State scored three more runs on three hits and a Longwood error.

Emma Entzminger (2-for-2) and Cox led off the frame with singles, which spelled the end of the day for Longwood starter Jenna Carnes, who would be tagged with the loss.  Her replacement Libby Morris, surrendered an RBI single up the middle to Madrid.  Hufstetler then lined out to left, which scored Cox and gave the Spartans a 5-2 lead.

A ground out moved Madrid (2-for-4, RBI), who was on second, to third base.  A throwing error, on a Martinez grounder to short, allowed Madrid to score and SJSU took a 6-2 lead in the fifth.

The Spartans banged out 10 hits; the 12th time in 19 games they have reached double digit hits this year.  They have won each of those 12 matchups.

Game 2 vs. Hawai'i

A three-run fourth inning Hawai'i rally was the difference in the Spartans 6-3 defeat.

Tied 3-3 after three and a half, Allison Lang gave up a lead off walk followed by an RBI double.  The next batter bunted, which allowed the runner on second to move up and then score on a throwing error by Lang.  With runners on the corners and two away, the runner on third stole home to make the score 6-3.

The Rainbow Wahine got 1-0 lead with a bases loaded hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the first.

The Spartans got the run back in the top of the third. Emma Entzminger reached on an error in right field and wound upon second.  A fly out allowed her to move to third.  Michelle Cox then laid down a bunt single and made it to second.  Jessica Madrid (3-for-4) bunted to load the bases and Jessie Hufstetler worked the pitcher for a walk to drive in the run.

Hawai'i got a two-out home run in the bottom of the third to move back in front, 3-1.

However, in the top of the fourth, SJSU got the runs right back.  A lead off walk, fielder choice and a second base on balls loaded them up with no outs.  Entzminger flied out to center driving in the Spartans second run of the game.  Two batters later, Cox (2-for-4, RBI) singled in the second run of the frame tying the game 3-3.

The Spartans had a chance in the top of the seventh.  A one-out double followed by a walk and single, loaded the bases.  However, successive infield pop outs ended the threat and the game with San José State on the short end of a 6-3 decision.

Lang (4-2) went six innings, giving up seven hits and four earned runs.  She struck out three and walked two.
