Mary Nutter Proves Tough To Crack For Spartans

Final Stats

Palm Springs, Calif. – San Jose State’s softball team played well in each of its games at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, but with came up on the short end of its last three contests of the weekend. They lost 1-0 to both Wisconsin and #5 Oregon, and 6-4 to Mississippi State.

"The margins of victory at the highest level of this game are so slim, and we saw that all weekend," head coach Peter Turner said.  "I'm pleased that we performed pretty well.  We were in each of these games and had chances to beat some of the best team's in the nation.  But with that said, we have to stop making mistakes and we have to play better.  We belong at this level, but we won't get to where we want to go if we don't clean up our play."

Wisconsin 1, San José State 0

Madison Aurin set down 13 of the first 15 batters she faced and of the two hits Wisconsin (7-6) got in the first five innings; one was erased trying to steal second.

But in the bottom of the sixth, a Badgers’ leadoff single proved to be the difference in the game. With the runner on first, a passed ball allowed her to move into scoring position and a sacrifice bunt got her to third. Another passed ball allowed an unearned run to score and give Wisconsin a 1-0 lead.

San José State (9-5) out hit the Badgers 5-to-4, had runners on in each of the first six innings, and twice moved one into scoring position, but was never able to push a run across.

Aurin (1-5) was the tough luck loser. Kaelin Amrein went 2-for-3 and Emma Entzminger, Cassidy Clark and Maricela Matos each had a hit.

Wisconsin batters got four singles off Aurin and Haley Hestekin (2-2) tossed a complete game, striking out four.

Mississippi State 6, San José State 4

SJSU got six hits and scored three times in the first three innings to jump on Mississippi State 3-0 midway through the third.

Emma Entzminger led off the game with a single and two batters later stole second. Madison Aurin then walked. A pair of throwing errors in the infield, allowed Entzminger to come around and score an unearned run and left Aurin at third. Grace Garvey drove Aurin in with a single to left to make it 2-0 SJSU.

In the second the Spartans (9-6) loaded the bases with two outs, but a strike out ended the threat.

To open the third, San José State picked back-to-back singles from Cassidy Clark and Aurin. With runners on the corners, a ground out moved Aurin to second, but Clark couldn’t advance. A Jacey Phipps grounded out to the right side which drove in Clark and made the score 3-0.

In the bottom of the third Mississippi State (12-2) got three hits, including a two-run homer to center off Spartans’ starter Caroline Bowman. The freshman would get out of the inning leading 3-2, but her day would be over.

Madison Aurin (1-6) took over in the fourth and in the fifth ran into trouble.

With one out, she allowed three consecutive hits, the third a two-RBI single to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead. Two batters later, with a runner on third, Mississippi State got a two run homer to center to extend the lead to 6-3.

SJSU got a run back in the top of the sixth. With one out and the bases loaded, Emma Entzminger drove in a run on a fielder choice to the right side. It got the Spartans to within 6-4, but they could get not closer.

Clark, Entzminger and Desiree Reyes each had two hits to lead the team. Aurin pitched two innings of relief and took the loss.

Mississippi State’s Holly Ward (6-2) pitched five innings of four-hit relief to earn the win.
