Final Stats

Stockton, Calif. – The #7/8 LSU Tigers scored four runs on ten hits and limited the San José State softball team to five hits in a 4-0 victory in the first game of the Libby Matson Invitational on Thursday afternoon.

LSU (11-0) scored three runs in the first and another in the third off Spartans starter Madison Aurin. Aurin (1-3) surrendered eight hits to the Tigers and was replaced in the fifth by Caroline Bowman. Bowman gave up two more hits and struck out four in the final three innings.

In the top of the first, with a runner on second and no outs, Emily Griggs got an RBI double down the left field line. Two batters later Amanda Doyle hit a two-run homer over the right field fence to stake LSU to a 3-0 lead.

In the third, the Tigers tacked on another run. With one out and a runner on third base, Amber Serrett singled through the left side to plate LSU’s fourth run of the game.

For San José State (8-3), Aurin (1-for-3) got first hit, a leadoff single in the second, and moved into scoring position on a groundout by Georgia Blair. The Spartans two attempts to move Aurin to third or score were squelched by LSU pitcher Carley Hoover (5-0). She got two of her nine strikeouts to end the inning and the SJSU threat.

Brittany Abacherli (1-for-3) and Cassidy Clark (2-for-3) started the fourth with back-to-back singles. Aurin then hit into a fielder’s choice and with one out the Spartans had runners on first and third. But as in the second inning, Hoover ended the threat with a pair of strikeouts.

Clark picked up a two-out single in the sixth and Kaelin Amrein (1-for-2) singled in the seventh, but SJSU couldn’t capitalize on them and lost 4-0.

SJSU gets right back to action on Friday in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif. The Spartans open play at 12:30 p.m. against Auburn and then play St. John’s at 3:00 p.m.
