Santa Clara, Calif. – After a pair of victories on day one of the 2015 Bronco Classic, the San José State softball team has reached double-digit wins in just 13 games.

The Spartans (10-3) banged out double digit hits in both games; 10 in the team’s 8-1 victory over Idaho State and 11 versus Illinois-Chicago in a 7-0 win.

“I thought we played really well today, especially our pitching,” head coach Peter Turner said.  “We limited our mistakes in the circle and got hitting up and down the line up.”

Game 1 vs. Idaho State

The Spartans scored three runs in the bottom of the first with just one hit.  Michelle Cox walked to open the inning followed by a Jessica Madrid single. Two batters later with runners on first and third and one out, Sharon-Renae Estrada walked to load them up.

A wild pitch in Alyssa Martinez’s at-bat allowed Cox to score.  Cox finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs.  Two batters after Martinez, with two outs, Erin Rodriguez as hit by a pitch to load them up again. Emma Entzminger walked to push across a run and then Daisy Conchas was issued a bases-loaded free pass for the third run.

In the second, with two out and Jessie Hufstetler on first after being hit by a pitch, Estrada staked the Spartans to a 5-0 lead hammering a two-run shot out of the park.  It is her team-leading eighth round tripper of the season.

Idaho State got its lone run of the game in the third inning.  They used a one-out walk, followed by a ground out and back-to-back singles to plate the run.  The two hits for the Bengals would be half of the their total output for the game.

The Spartans scored single runs in each of the next three innings.  A Casey Lester sac fly in the third plated Entzminger, who went 2-for-3 in the game and scored twice.

In the fourth, a Hufstetler RBI-double scored Cox who had led off the inning with a single.

Entzminger and Lester singled around a Conchas walk to load the bases in the fifth.  Two batters later, a Madrid groundout scored Entzminger making it an 8-1 ballgame.

Allison Lang set the Bengals down in order in the sixth and seventh for the complete game win.  It is her third complete game victory in her last four outings.  Lang allowed four hits, one earned run, and struck out four to improve to 4-1 on the year.

Game 2 vs. Illinois-Chicago

Nicole Schultz and Jessie Hufstetler each had three hits and Katelyn Linford earned her second win of the season, facing all but one batter, in the Spartans 7-0 defeat of the Illinois-Chicago Flames.

Hufstetler, who leads the team with 28 RBI, opened the game by knocking in a run in the top of the first.  It was a double and came after Michelle Cox and Jessica Madrid (2-for-3, 2R) opened the inning with back-to-back singles.

San José State got its second run in the third inning.  Madrid led off the frame with a single.  Hufstetler doubled and after Sharon-Renae Estrada walked, the bases were loaded.  Two batters later Emma Entzminger hit a long fly ball down the left field line, which was caught in foul territory, but was deep enough to allow Madrid to score.  After one and a half, the score was 2-0 Spartans.

In the fourth, SJSU used two hits and an error by the Flames (3-3) to plate three more runs.  A leadoff single from Schultz (3-for-4, R), the error, a strikeout and a walk, left the bases loaded with one out. Hufstetler (3-for-3, 3 RBI) banged out her third double of the game, which scored Schultz and Chelsea Jenner, who had reached on the earlier error. Alyssa Martinez then hit a sac fly to right which drove in Madrid and San José State was up 5-0.

Taylor Purdy blasted a solo shot to lead off the fifth for a 6-0 lead.

In the sixth, Illinois-Chicago finally decided it would be better to put Hufstetler on rather than pitch to her.  Two batters later Martinez smacked a double to center and was followed by an Entzminger (0-for-2, 2 RBI) sac fly to right driving in the final run of the game.

Linford (2-1) scattered five hits, struck out five and walked two in pitching 6.2 innings for the win.  Berlyn Rippentrop entered with two outs in the sixth to get the last out of the frame before Linford came back in to pitch the seventh.

The Spartans will play a single game on Saturday in the Bronco Classic.  The opponent will once again be Illinois-Chicago with first pitch scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
