Pitching The Difference In Spartans 11-0 Win

Tempe, Ariz. – San José State freshman pitcher Caroline Bowman tossed her second complete game win by scattering five hits, walking none and striking out three in an 11-0 run-rule victory over the UTEP Miners on the final day of the 2018 Kajikawa Classic.

“Caroline was very efficient,” head coach Peter Turner said of Bowman, who threw 54 pitches in the five-inning win. “She pitches to contact and today that worked because our defense was on point.”

After getting the Miners in order in the first, Bowman surrendered back-to-back singles to lead off the second. A five-to-three double play erased the lead runner at third and the next batter singled to center. The runner at second tried to score on the play, but Brittany Abacherli threw a frozen rope home to get the third out and keep UTEP (1-4) off the board.

In the third, Bowman (2-0) gave up two more singles and had a runner at second with two outs, but slammed the door with a strikeout. She went on to set down the final six batters in order to earn her second complete game victory of the weekend.

While Bowman was enjoying her time in the circle, the same could not be said of three UTEP pitchers who faced the San José State (4-1) batters. In five innings, they combined to issue 12 walks, uncorked four wild pitches and watched their catcher get charged with three passed balls.

“You have to take what your opponent gives you,” Turner said. “We capitalized on (UTEP’s) miscues and trust me if they were getting pitches over the plate, we would have hit them. As it is, I’m pleased with the discipline we showed at the plate. Good teams can win games in lots of different ways. Today it was pitching, defense and plate discipline.”

In the first Emma Entzminger (0-for-1, R, RBI, 2BB) started things off with a walk and two batters later Madison Aurin reached on a fielding error at shortstop. A passed ball moved both runners up a base and Georgia Blair (2-for-2, R, 2 RBI, 2B, BB) brought them home with an RBI double. After moving up to third on a wild pitch, Blair scored on a Kristen Heffley (1-for-2, RBI, BB) single to give SJSU a 3-0 lead after half an inning.

The Spartans tacked on three more in the top of the second. Grace Garvey (1-for-2, R, 3RBI, 2BB) walked to open the inning followed by a Maricela Matos (1-for-2, R, BB) single. It would be the only base hit the Spartans would get in the frame. After two quick outs, Cassidy Clark walked to load the bases. Aurin (0-for-3, R, RBI, BB) followed Clark with a walk and an RBI. A pair of wild pitches then scored Matos and Clark to make it 6-0 heading to the bottom of the inning.

After Makayla Englestad (0-for-1, 2R, 2BB) and Garvey walked to start the third, Entzminger hit a one-out sacrifice fly for a 7-0 lead.

SJSU tacked on its final four runs in the fourth, all with two outs. Blair stared the Spartans off with a two-out single. Heffley walked and both she and Blair were lifted for pinch runners. Both runners advanced on a passed ball and Englestad walked to load them up.

Garvey then doubled down the right field line. She cleared the bases with the shot and ended up on going to third on the throw home. Back-to-back walks loaded them up again and Garvey scored on a wild pitch to make it 11-0 after three and a half.

That would be the final score as Bowman and the Spartans closed the game out in five innings.
