Katelyn Linford scattered six hits and struck out five in 5.1 innings to earn her second win of the season and Colette Riggs earned her first save of the season in 1.2 innings as the Spartans (2-3) shut out the Virginia Cavaliers 1-0 on Saturday morning.

The lone run of the game came in the third inning. Kristen Heffley reached base on a fielding error by Virginia’s starting pitcher Lexi Mettler. Cassidy Clark (1-of-2) singled to left to move Heffley into scoring position and two batters later Madison Aurin (1-of-3, RBI) drove Heffley in with a single up the middle.

Virginia, which got a one-out triple in the first but had Linford strand the runner on a groundout and strikeout, had three scoring threats in the last three innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Cavaliers put their first two runners on on back-to-back singles. A foul out on a bunt attempts followed by a pickoff at second and a strikeout ended the threat.

In the sixth, UVA had runners on second and third with one out. Riggs who had entered a batter earlier and gave up a double which put both runners in scoring position, induced two infield pop ups to end the inning.

In the seventh, Riggs got the first two out, but a pair of walks sandwiched around a single, loaded the bases. Riggs got the last out of the game on a ground out for the 1-0 win.
