Women's Soccer Recognized For Academics

San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State University women's soccer team has earned a team academic award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). The Western Athletic Conference champion Spartans received the 2009 NSCAA College Team Academic Award for having a team grade point average over 3.0. The Spartans, under the guidance of conference coach of the year Jeff Leightman, are first time recipients of the distinction. The team met the award's criteria by posting a cumulative GPA of 3.05 for the Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 semesters.

This marks the first time the program has had a team GPA over 3.0 for a full academic year in the five years since it started being tracked in that manner.

At the 2009 Arm & Pat Hanzad Scholar-Athlete Celebration inside The Event Center on the morning of Tuesday, December 1, Leightman was named the SJSU Athletic Board's Academic Head Coach of the Year. Fourth-year assistant coach Craig Winans has also played a large role in the Spartans' success in the classroom.
