Soccer's Murphy Named To WAC All-Tournament Team

Reno, Nev. - Cristin Murphy of the San Jose State University women's soccer team was named to the Western Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the four-day event on Sunday, November 5.

Murphy, out of Aptos, Calif. (Cabrillo College/Aptos HS), started both games the Spartans played at the 2006 WAC Tournament at Nevada’s Mackay Stadium. The senior tri-captain earned credit for a total of five shots from her position on the right side of midfield. Murphy earlier picked up All-WAC distinction for the first time, gaining selection to the second team.

In Thursday’s tournament opener, fourth-seeded San Jose State played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie with fifth-seeded Boise State and advanced via a penalty kick tiebreaker, 4-2. The Spartans then battled through another 90 minutes of scoreless regulation and 19-plus minutes of overtime against top-seeded defending tournament champion Fresno State the very next day, before allowing a goal with eight seconds remaining in the second overtime period to fall, 1-0.

San Jose State closed the 2006 season at 7-11-3, improving on its overall win total for the third straight season in head coach Dave Siracusa’s third year in charge. The seven wins are the most since 2000. The Spartans were 4-2-1 in conference play, matching their highest mark in WAC victories since joining the league in 1996. SJSU also went 4-2-1 in 2005 for a share of second place in the final standings.

Murphy, along with fellow senior tri-captains Nicole Martinez and Cynthia Pinkney, made their final appearance as Spartans in the WAC Tournament semifinal with Fresno State. The trio helped San Jose State to an 8-4-2 conference record over their two active seasons.

Martinez (Bakersfield, Calif./Holy Names University) appeared in all 42 games, starting 29. She produced career highs of three goals, three assists and nine total points in 2006 to go with one goal from 2005. Murphy played in 34 games, starting 23, including all 19 games in which she played in 2006. She registered two goals and six assists for a share of the conference lead, for 10 total points this season after finishing with one goal and two assists in 2005. Pinkney (Anaheim, Calif./Cypress College), a two-time tri-captain, played in all 21 games as a senior and 32 games in all as a Spartan, starting nine. She tallied four career assists.

Nevada and Fresno State were scoreless following 110 minutes of soccer in Sunday afternoon’s title game, with the third-seeded host Wolf Pack taking the penalty-kick shootout, 4-2, to earn the tournament title and the WAC’s automatic berth into the 2006 NCAA Championship.
