FRESNO, Calif. - San Jose State University scored three goals, two in a span of 67 seconds, to win the Western Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament Sunday, November 5 with a 3-1 victory over Tulsa.
With the win, the Spartans earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The tournament field and the first round pairings, sites and game times will be announced tonight (Sunday) at 7:00 p.m. (PT). It will be San Jose State's first appearance in the tournament.
Kristina Jacob put the Spartans in front 1-0 when she scored on an unassisted goal 2:21 into the second half. At the 68:05 mark, Karli Silveira scored on a header on a crossing pass from Jennifer Mescher. San Jose State clinched the win 67 seconds later when Mescher passed to Jolene Keel, who had a wide open shot at the goal.
"It was kind of like our game at San Jose (a 1-0 Tulsa win on Oct. 8), commented SJSU interim head coach Tamie Grimes. In both games the Spartans outshot Tulsa, including a 20-8 advantage in today's game.
Jacob, who scored one goal and had one assist in the three games at the tournament, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Julie Brum, Brandy Apodaca, Jackie Ostdiek and Erin Meyer were named to the All-Tournament Team.
"Our seniors were phenominal all weekend," Grimes said, noting that of the Spartans' nine goals in the three games, all but one were scored by a senior.
