SantaCruz, Three Others Recognized At WAC's Annual Banquet

Ruston, La.---- The 2010 All-Western Athletic Conference women's soccer teams were announced Wednesday night, as selected by the conferences nine head coaches. San Jose State received numerous awards from the WAC as Kayla Santacruz earned Freshman of the Year distinction, and three other Spartans earned All-WAC honors.

Kayla Santacruz, a freshman from San Ramon, Calif. (California HS), helped lead San Jose State to the WAC regular season co-championship. Santacruz tallied eight goals and three assists for 19 points during WAC play this season. The midfielder leads the conference in points (19), points per game (2.38), goals (8) and goals per game (1.00) in conference play. She becomes the second player in program history to be named Freshman of the Year as Liz Behlen was the 2005 WAC Freshman of the Year.

"Kayla in conference play has lit it up," said Spartan head coach Jeff Leightman. "She's the leading scorer and one of the best forwards in the league. I'm excited to see her continue on with her career at San Jose State."

Kelsey Lord, a sophomore from Livermore, Calif. (Granada HS), leads the team in points (29), assists (11) and goals (9). Lord ranks among the WAC's best, leading the conference in assists (8) and assists per game (1.00), and  second best only to Santacruz in points per game (2.00).

"Lord is both dynamic and dangerous," noted Leightman. "She can wreak havoc on the other team and has made a huge impact in the WAC.  She truly deserves the honor."

Jessica Ingram, a junior from San Jose, Calif. (Santa Teresa HS), anchored a defense that went undefeated at home in WAC play this season. She started in all 19 matches, leading the team with 1570 minutes of play. Ingram posted four goals and one assist this year and added 15 shots.  Ingram is a two-time first team All-WAC honoree.

"Ingram is a tremendous player," stated Leightman. "She is the anchor of our backline. We have been better defensively the past month, and she's definitely been a part of that."

Lauren Sanchez, a junior from San Jose, Calif. (Archbishop Mitty HS), started in all 19 matches this season. The junior midfielder and two-time Academic All-WAC honoree, tallied five points (2 goals, 1 assist) this season.

"Sanchez has been really rock solid all year and probably has been our most consistent player," said Leightman. "She runs the show and has been tremendous. Sanchez made that position (midfield) hers and really took it over."

The awards were announced at the league's annual banquet on the eve of the 2010 WAC Tournament in Ruston, La.  The tournament begins Thursday with quarterfinal matches.  San Jose State, the top-seed in the tournament, will play the winner of the Louisiana Tech-Boise State match on Friday, November 5, at 3 p.m. CDT/1 p.m. PDT.  A live video stream will be available on for a nominal fee, while a link to live stats will be posted on the Spartan website.
