FRESNO, Calif. - The San Jose State University women's soccer team is one win away from their first NCAA Tournament berth.

Julie Brum scored two goals and had two assists to lead the Spartans to a 4-2 upset of 18th-ranked SMU in a semifinal game of the Western Athletic Conference Championships at Fresno State's Bulldog Stadium. San Jose State will play Tulsa, a 2-1 double overtime winner over Fresno State in the other semifinal, at 10:00 a.m. Sunday. The winner of Sunday's game receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

"Oh my God, what a game," exclaimed SJSU interim head coach Tamie Grimes, whose team is now 9-12-1 overall.

Brum and Brandy Apodaca each scored a goal in the second half to lift the Spartans to the win. Brum scored the game-winning goal at the 52:58 mark after Cynthia Harrah's free kick was deflected in front of the SMU goal.

In the 83rd minute, Apodaca beat a Mustang defender on the left side after receiving a pass from Brum. Her shot was blocked by SMU goalkeeper Becca Lief. But Apodaca alertly followed the shot and booted home the rebound.

Kim Harvey gave SMU a 1-0 lead at the 19:28 mark of the first half when she scored on a penalty kick. The Spartans answered 5 1/2 minutes later on Brum' s first goal of the game, also on a penalty kick.

SMU regained the lead on Harvey's second goal of the night but San Jose State again rallied, scoring when Karli Silveira took a pass from Brum and scored from about five yards out.

Grimes said the game plan worked perfectly. "We just said we're going to win the game by going at them instead of sitting back."

Grimes also commended the play of Trisha Forni, who replaced Eryn Meyer early in the second half at goalkeeper after Meyer was kicked in the head while making a save. "Trisha Forni came in and played incredible," said Grimes. "She took control of the box right away."
