Women's Soccer Falls To Boise State, 2-1

Boise, Idaho For the fourth match in a row the San Jose State women’s soccer team scored first, but for the third time in those games, they were unable to hold onto their advantage and fell to Boise State, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.  The loss leaves the Spartans record at (5-10-4, 2-4-1 WAC), while the Broncos improve to (10-7-2, 3-3-1 WAC).

The only tally of the first half came off the foot of Spartans’ leading scorer, Emmy Belding, who took a stolen pass and netted her seventh goal of the year.  The score came at the 33:34 mark.  Jessica Ingram was credited with an assist on the goal, her second of the season.

In the second half the Broncos applied the pressure.  They got the equalizer in the 58th minute on a 35-yard lob by Kaylea Perenon.  At the 87:26 mark, Randi Baker took a shot from 22 yards out that got past Spartan keeper Sarah Wisotsky for the game winner.

The Spartan offense was sustained by Belding (3 shots, 2 on-goal, 1 goal) and Ingram (1 assist).

In goal, Wistosky got her first start of the season.  She made three saves while allowing two goals in her fourth appearance of the season.  Her record is 0-2-0 and her GAA is 1.53.

“I thought Boise played at a high level today,” said head coach Jeff Leightman.  “Unfortunately, we didn’t match their intensity throughout the match.  We scored the first goal and then let our foot off the pedal for some reason.”

“We are obviously disappointed with this result,” Leightman added.  “But we have to move on and focus on the WAC Tournament and our opponent on Thursday.”

The opponent the Spartans will face opening round of the WAC Tournament in Reno, Nev. on Thursday, November 6, will be these same Boise State Broncos.  Boise State is the #4 seed and the Spartans are #5.  The match is scheduled to kick off at 3:00 p.m.
