Women's Soccer: Spartans Head to WAC Championships

The San Jose State University women's soccer team travels to Fresno, Calif. today (Wednesday) for the Western Athletic Conference Championships. The tournament, hosted by Fresno State, is scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Sunday at Bulldog Stadium on the Fresno State campus.

San Jose State is the fourth seed and will play #5 seed UTEP at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday in the first game of the tournament. The winner will play #1 seed SMU at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3.

The winner of the tournament receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

SJSU record
San Jose State is 7-12-1 overall. The Spartans finished with a 3-3-1 record in conference games this season. The Spartans dropped a 2-0 decision at Santa Clara University Tuesday night.

San Jose State University has qualified for the Western Athletic Conference Championships in women's soccer every year since 1996, when the Spartans joined the conference in the sport.

San Jose State has a 3-4 record at the conference championships. Last year the Spartans lost to Fresno State, 1-0, in the semifinals. The previous three years saw San Jose State win its quarterfinal game before being eliminated in the semifinals. In 1998, the Spartans upset SMU in the first round, 1-0, before dropping a 2-0 decision to BYU. In 1996 and 1997, San Jose State defeated New Mexico in the first round then lost to BYU in the seminfinals.

Of the seven games San Jose State has played in the WAC Championships, six have been shutouts. The lone exception was the Spartans' quarterfinal win over New Mexico in 1996, which was decided by a 3-1 score.

San Jose State holds a 2-0 all-time series lead against UTEP, including a 2-1 victory over the Miners this season at Spartan Stadium.

The Spartans are 2-1 all-time against SMU. The Mustangs won this year's game in Dallas, Texas, 4-0.

San Jose State has won once and lost once against Tulsa. The Spartans dropped a 1-0 decision this year at Spartan Stadium.

SJSU trails in the all-time series against TCU, 0-2. The Horned Frogs recorded a 3-1 victory this season in Fort Worth, Texas.

San Jose State trails, 2-5-1, in the all-time series against Fresno State. The Spartans won 2-1 earlier this season at Spartan Stadium.

#5 Brandy Apodaca (Midfielder, Senior, Pleasanton) - Has started all 20 games for the Spartans this season. Is the leading scorer on the team with four goals and four assists (12 points). Scored only goal in 1-0 win over Cal Poly on Aug. 29, scored a goal in a 4-0 win at Portland State on Aug. 27 and had a goal in a 3-2 win at Pacific on Sept. 10. Had assists against Hawai'i (1-1 tie on Sept. 28), Nevada (8-1 win on Oct. 1) and Fresno State (2-1 win on Oct. 20).

#4 Julie Brum (Forward, Senior, San Jose) - Has played in 19 games and started 13 this season. Has four goals and two assists. Scored both goals in 2-1 win over Fresno State on Oct. 20 which clinched a playoff berth for the Spartans. Had a goal and an assist in 8-1 win at Nevada on Oct. 1, scored a goal in 4-0 win over Portland State on Aug. 27 and had the assist in SJSU's 1-0 win over Oregon State on Sept. 13. She is tied for second in the SJSU record book for career assists, with 14.

#23 Trisa Forni (Goalkeeper, Freshman, Huntington Beach) - Has played in eight games and started five. Has allowed 11 goals and has 24 saves in 451 minutes. Has a solo shutout over Cal Poly on Aug. 29 (a 1-0 SJSU win) and a combined shutout in a 1-0 win over Oregon State on Sept. 13. She is tied with current teammate Eryn Meyer for fourth in the SJSU record book for single season combined shutouts and is tied for second with Meyer for career combined shutouts, with two.

#16 Cynthia Harrah (Defender, Freshman, Fresno) - Has played in 15 games and started nine this season. Scored her only goal of the year in an 8-1 win at Nevada on Oct. 1.

#10 Jessica Hernandez (Defender, Sophomore, Milpitas) - Has played in 19 games, including 16 starts, this season. She has taken two shots and not scored.

#7 Kristina Jacob (Midfielder, Junior, San Jose) - Has started and played in 17 games this season. She has scored four goals and has one assist. Scored two goals in the season-opener at Oregon (Aug. 25), and scored the lone SJSU goal in a 1-1 tie at Hawai'i (Sept. 28) and a 3-1 loss at TCU (Oct. 13). Her only assist was on Oct. 20 against Fresno State.

#2 Jolene Keel (Forward, Senior, Westminster, Colo.) - Has played in 19 games and started 13 this season. Has three goals and two assists. Scored the game-winning goal and had an assist against UTEP (Oct. 6). Scored a goal in a 3-2 win at Pacific (Sept. 10) and scored a goal against Oregon (Aug. 29). Had an assist against Wisconsin (Sept. 4).

#14 Rosie Madera (Midfielder, Senior, Roseville) - Started and played in all 20 games this season. Scored her only goal in a 1-0 win over Oregon State on Sept. 13. Is tied second in SJSU career records in games played with 79.

#3 Jennifer Mescher (Midfielder, Sophomore, Mission Viejo) - Twin sister of Kristyn Mescher (#24). Has started and played in all 20 games. Has scored two goals and recorded four assists. Scored a goal in 3-2 win at Pacific (Sept. 10) and contributed a goal in an 8-1 win at Nevada (Oct. 1). #1 Eryn Meyer (Goalkeeper, Sophomore, Portland, Ore.) - Played in 17 games and started 15. Has allowed 25 goals and recorded 77 saves in 1,402 minutes. Transfered to San Jose State from Portland State. Recorded a solo shutout in her first game as a Spartan, 4-0 at Portland State on Aug. 27. Has a combined shutout in 1-0 win over Oregon State on Sept. 13. She is tied with current teammate Trisha Forni for fourth in the SJSU record book for single season combined shutouts and is tied with Forni for second for career combined shutouts, with two.
