Moscow, Idaho - In a near must-win situation on the road and with a berth in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament on the line, the San Jose State women’s soccer team defeated the Vandals of the University of Idaho, 1-0, Friday afternoon. The win improves the Spartans' record to 5-9-4, 2-3-1 WAC and Idaho drops to 1-15-2, 0-5-1 WAC.
The win, in combination with a 1-0 Louisiana Tech loss to Utah State Friday evening, secured San Jose State a spot in the six-team WAC Tournament which begins on Thursday, November 6 in Reno, Nev.
In the first 25 minutes the sides traded chances. Spartan keeper Nina Butera, who registered her fourth shutout of the season, made her lone save of the match in the 16th minute.
In the 27th minute, freshman defender Angela Santoro took a shot that the Vandals keeper stopped, but at the 28:04 mark freshman mid Amanda Martin took a cross from sophomore Lauren Ng-Pinkerton and tapped it in to the open goal to give the Spartans the lead, 1-0.
“We had a two vs. one on the right side with Lo (Lauren Ng-Pinkerton) and Angie (Angela Santoro),” said head coach Jeff Leightman. “Lo played a nice cross to Mandy (Amanda Martin) who played it in.”
The weather which was sunny in the first half, turned into a downpour in the second half and affected play for the rest of the match.
“We got the early goal and then gutted it out the rest of the way,” said Leightman. “We had a few chances to go up 2-0, but couldn’t convert them. We did enough to get the win and that is what is most important.”
Offensively, the Spartans were led by Martin (1 shot, 1 on-goal, 1 goal), Ng-Pinkerton (1 assist), Emmy Belding (3 shots, 1 on-goal) and Santoro (2 shots, 1 on-goal). Others contributing include: Kim Johnston and Lauren Sanchez (1 shot, 1 on-goal each) and Stephanie Righetti, Kaila Waitley and Katie Bonadies each took one shot.
In goal, Butera earned her fourth win of the season. Her record now stands at 4-4-2 with a 1.05 goals against average.
The Spartans complete their regular season schedule on Sunday, November 2 in Boise, Idaho when they face Boise State in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. Fans can follow the match on Live Stats through the link at www.sjsuspartans.com.
