Women's Soccer Seniors Aim To Go Out On Top

The San Jose State University women's soccer program will honor seven key members this Friday, October 30, on Senior Night inside Spartan Stadium. Kick-off against Western Athletic Conference rival Fresno State is slated for approximately 5:00 p.m., following a special ceremony recognizing Emmy Belding, Brittany Boehm, Katie Bonadies, Nina Butera, Roxy Kamal, Hallsie Pacheco and Angela Nuñez, for their enormous contributions to the program.

SJSUSpartans.com had these seven ladies reminisce about their fondest memories in the Spartan Blue and Gold, discuss what they take away from their experience as San Jose State University student-athletes, and look ahead to what's next. In addition to their numerous collective athletic and academic accolades, all seven are on course to complete their undergraduate degree requirements.

Emmy Belding

Spartan Memories
"The time I have been here has been the time of my life. Every second spent with this amazing team has been so memorable and truly one of the greatest gifts I have ever been given. I have had the time of my life."

The San Jose State Experience
"I entered this program as one, and leave with 20-plus amazing friendships that will last a lifetime. The bond I share with this team is such a gift. I leave a better soccer player, and an even better person. The important life lessons that come with being part of a team have allowed me to grow as a person. Being a student-athlete has been such a privilege, and I leave with such pride and honor to be able to call myself a San Jose State Spartan. It has been one of the greatest gifts in my life, ever. I am beyond blessed and forever grateful."

On Senior Night
"One of my dear mother's last requests was that on Senior Night, my whole family walks me out. It will be so hard to not have her there, as she was such a Spartan fan. We will miss her dearly and will honor her by our family."

What's Next?
"I plan to pursue a career in photography. I will continue to play soccer on local teams, and of course, come cheer on the women's soccer team! A Spartan I will forever be."

Brittany Boehm
Position: Defender
Hometown: San Ramon, Calif.
Major: Liberal Studies, Preparation for Teaching
Expected Graduation Date: December, 2010

Spartan Memories
"I would have to say that my top memory as a Spartan is my second family. All of the girls I have played with this year are my sisters. I have never been on a team that has had a bond like this team has. I am just so blessed to be a part of it. I will miss playing soccer, but most of all, I will miss playing with and being around this team."

The San Jose State Experience
"Oh wow, four years have gone by really fast, but I have managed to cram a lot into these four years. My friendship with my teammate/roommate/best friend, Hallsie, is something I will take away, keep, and cherish for my entire life. I don't think I would have been able to make it through these four years if I didn't have her. Also, the person I have developed into. I can admit openly that I had some growing up to do when I first started here, not that I don't still have some growing up to do after soccer, but at least I can say I have changed for the better since I have started here. Finally, being a part of history is a pretty amazing thing (the winning streak, regionally ranked, and hopefully winning WAC)."

What's Next
"I'm moving back home to San Ramon at the end of this semester. I will continue to go to school, work, and mix in some coaching for soccer. Five years from now, I would like to be a fourth-grade teacher, and be happy and healthy."

Katie Bonadies
Position: Forward
Hometown: Los Gatos, Calif.
Major: Art, Concentration in Spatial Art
Expected Graduation Date: December, 2010

Spartan Memories
"My top memory as a Spartan was scoring my first collegiate goal at the Air Force Academy last fall (September 26, 2008)."

The San Jose State Experience
"I have learned some valuable life skills in group work and time management as I have spent my time as a student-athlete. Working with others, on a team and on the coaching staff, has been a vital part of my experience here, and I think that the experience I have had at San Jose State will greatly benefit me when I move on in different aspects of my life."

What's Next?
"I am looking forward to being just a student, and concentrating on my schoolwork. I am looking forward to starting my career in the field of art."

Nina Butera
Position: Goalkeeper
Hometown: San Jose, Calif.
Major: Child and Adolescent Development
Expected Graduation Date: December, 2010

Spartan Memories
"One of my top memories here will be from a couple of weeks ago, when it was pouring rain. We worked on diving headers, and I got to see Jeff (Leightman) do a diving header into a puddle. It was hilarious. I will also remember all of the trips that we went on, from the long bus ride to Arizona two years ago, seeing the Grand Canyon, to the East Coast trip this year and seeing the Capitol."

The San Jose State Experience
"The one thing that I will always have from my experience here at San Jose State is the amazing people that I have met. I know that in the future, I will have these teammates as friends for life."

What's Next?
"My future plans after I am done playing soccer include working at an afterschool program and teaching children about the importance of physical activity and nutrition. I also plan on traveling a lot with my family. In addition, I will still be coaching, and I will definitely still be playing soccer, whether it's indoor or outdoor."

Roxy Kamal
Position: Forward
Hometown: San Jose, Calif.
Major: Business Administration, Concentration in Marketing
Expected Graduation Date: December, 2010

Spartan Memories
"This season so far will always be the highlight of my time here at State. The friendships I have made and the success we have had so far, has made everything we have worked for in the past four years completely worth it. Regardless of how we finish this year, I am proud to say I am a Spartan. Playing for Jeff (Leightman) and Craig (Winans), and lifting and conditioning under Coach (Chris) Holder, has been a blast."

The San Jose State Experience
"Being a student-athlete is not an easy task, and in the past four years, I have learned how to manage my time much more efficiently than before, and I have learned the importance of working in a team environment."

What's Next?
"I will continue to play soccer wherever I can, indoor, outdoor, etc. I will also continue to coach at Presentation (High School), and after graduation next year, I am looking to continue on to receive my master's degree."

Angela Nuñez
Position: Defender
Hometown: Cupertino, Calif.
Double Major: Business Administration, Concentration in Accounting & Psychology
Expected Graduation Date: December, 2010

Spartan Memories
"Personally, with all that I've been through (11 knee operations in all), just being able to play. As a team, being undefeated in conference so far (with two games left), and going in strong for the (Western Athletic Conference) tournament."

The San Jose State Experience
"Work ethic and determination, those are the two things that I have been tested by the most both on and off the field."

What's Next?
"My goal is to be somewhere in law enforcement, hopefully the FBI."

Hallsie Pacheco
Position: Midfielder
Hometown: Lodi, Calif.
Major: Biology, Concentration in Organismal Zoology
Expected Graduation Date: May, 2011

Spartan Memories
"This season as a whole. It is so great to be a part of a team that has so much talent and that is doing so well now. Also, this season, we had a lot of fun. We went to places like Washington, D.C., and Hawaii. I don't think I will ever forget the fun we had!"

The San Jose State Experience
"The lifelong friends that I have made over the past four years!"

What's Next?
"I plan to continue with school, and then hopefully attend veterinary school after I graduate."
