Spartans Fall At Utah State

LOGAN, Utah – Things were tough Friday for the San Jose State women’s soccer team from the outset, as host Utah State took a 1-0 lead three minutes into the game and never looked back on its way to a 3-0 Western Athletic Conference win.
Natalie Norris notched a goal off a corner kick from Kendra Pemberton just three minutes, 12 seconds into the game to give the Aggies (13-4-1, 5-1-1 WAC) a 1-0 lead. Utah State would outshoot the Spartans (5-11-1, 3-2-1 WAC) 9-1 in the first half and 18-4 after halftime for a 27-5 advantage in shots.
“Credit Utah State. Today, they were much better than us,” said San Jose State head coach Jeff Leightman. “I thought they came out very energetic, and I thought we came out very flat.”
Senior Jessica Ingram started her 12th game of the season Friday, giving her 69 starts in her career. She is now tied for eighth all-time at SJSU in career games started with Rosie Madera, who started 69 games from 1997-2000.
Utah State added two goals in the second half, one early on and another in the waning minutes of the game. Shantel Flanary tallied her 10th goal of the season 3 1/2 minutes into the second half for a 2-0 Aggies lead. In the 83rd minute, Jade Tarver took a shot inside the goalkeeper box and fired point-blank to the bottom-right of the goal for an unassisted score, giving Utah State the final 3-0 edge.
San Jose State goalkeeper Meghan Maiwald made eight saves, bringing her season total to 95. Maiwald is two saves shy of topping her season total of 96 from 2010. Aggies’ ‘keeper Molli Merrill made one save in logging her eighth shutout of the season.
The Spartans travel to Nevada for their regular season finale. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. San Jose State’s seed for the WAC tournament will become clearer after Sunday’s match.
“(We have) got to look on to Sunday and Nevada now,” said Leightman. That’s where our focus is, to try and spoil Nevada’s senior day.”
