UCSB tops 2002 adidas Bay Area Classic all-tournament team

SAN JOSE, Calif.—The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos took top honors in the 2002 adidas Bay Area Classic all-tournament team with four selections including the top offensive and defensive individual honors.

UC Santa Barbara’s sophomore midfielder Krystal Sandza was awarded the "Golden Boot" award as the tournaments leading scorer. Sandza scored her second hat trick of the season against Nevada in the first game of the tournament on Friday and added one goal in Sunday’s win over San Jose State.

Freshman defender Katie Cooper was named the defensive "Most Valuable Player" after anchoring a Gauchos defense that did not allow a single goal in the tournament. Cooper was also able to provide some offensive punch, scoring a goal in Sunday’s match.

The third adidas Bay Area Classic was hosted by San Jose State University at Spartan Stadium on Friday, Sept. 20 and Sunday, Sept. 22. Besides UC Santa Barbara and San Jose State, Nevada and Vermont also participated.
