RIVERSIDE, Calif.— Senior forward Emily New’s scored for the Spartans (1-1) and junior midfielder Mariko Yoshihara scored twice in the second half to secure the San Jose State University women’s soccer team’s first win of the young season.

San Jose State junior Jeane Sunseri created the team’s first scoring chance with a good takeaway just over ten minutes into the match. Sunseri stole the ball from a Highlander defender then found forward Alaina Chandler who passed it to a streaking Emily New. Emily tucked the ball into the left post past UCR (0-1) goalkeeper Katie blank for a 1-0 lead.

“It was great to get that first goal of the year out of the way,” said Spartan third year head coach Tamie Grimes. “It took some of the initial pressure off of the girls.”

For the afternoon the Highlanders out shot the Spartans 17-10, both teams managed five shots on the goal.

The game remained scoreless for the next 70 minutes until New found an open Yoshihara breaking away and with a perfect pass Mariko easily beat Blank for a 2-0 Spartan advantage.

Yoshihara’s second and the games final goal of the match came with under a minute to play. Yoshihara stole the ball from the Highlander goalkeeper and directed the ball into the open net.

Red shirt freshman Erin Lavey-making her first start in a Spartan uniform-denied all Highlander shots on goal picking up her first career win and shutout.

“As a team we played well today. It was nice to get a split of our first two games,” noted Grimes, referring to the team’s opening game loss at Loyola Marymount on Saturday.

The Spartans make their home debut on Friday, Sept. 6 at 7:00p.m. when they host the University of San Francisco at Spartan Stadium.
