Erin Lavey earns WAC "Defensive Player of the Week"

DENVER – After recording a complete-game shutout in her first NCAA start, freshman goalkeep Erin Lavey was recognized with the Western Athletic Conference "Defensive Player of the Week" award.

Lavey, from Pleasanton, Calif., earned the shutout in Monday’s 3-0 win at UC Riverside. In just her second appearance and first start, Lavey had a .667 goals against average in 135:00 of play this weekend. She allowed one goal in relief in a 4-0 loss to Loyola Marymount on Saturday, but earned the start on Monday and pitched a shutout against UC Riverside.

"She had such an incredible game and was so focussed and intense," noted Spartan head coach Tamie Grimes. "I'm excited she won this award and hope she can continue to play like this the rest of the season."

Hawai’i forward Natasha Kai earned the WAC "Offensive Player of the Week" honors after scoring three goals in two games. Other offensive nominees included: Mariko Yoshihara, San Jose State; Kelly Parker, UTEP; and Lauren Mussallem, SMU.

Other defensive nominees included: Megan Tarpenning, Nevada and Kyla Clark, UTEP.
