Spartans Cruise To 10th Win At CSUB; Unbeaten In 13

Bakersfield, Calif. - San Jose State University defeated Cal State Bakersfield, 2-0, in a non-conference game on Sunday afternoon, October 25. The win extended the Spartan unbeaten streak to 13 games, and was the team's 10th win of the season.

Spartan forward Kelsey Lord notched the first goal of the game, early in the second half, when she headed one into the back of the net. The 52nd-minute goal, which soared past Bakersfield goalie Jessica Montano, proved to be the game-winner. Emmy Belding and Roxy Kamal were credited with assists on the tally.

The only other goal came in the 77th minute, when Katie Bonadies one-touched a Lauren Ng-Pinkerton cross into the back of the net. Bonadies' third goal of the campaign made the score 2-0, which ended up being the final result.

The Spartan goalkeeping shined bright again on Sunday afternoon. Goalies Nina Butera and Danielle Anderson combined for the team's seventh shutout of the season, which ties a school record. Butera saved two shots in 62 minutes of work, and Anderson added two more. Montano, the Bakersfield goalkeeper, made three saves in the loss.

The victory gives the Spartans a record of 10-4-3 overall. This is the first time that San Jose State has reached the 10-win mark since 2000. Though the statistic is not officially tracked by the NCAA, the Spartans are believed to have the second-longest current unbeaten streak in the entire nation, behind top-ranked Stanford, which improved to a perfect 16-0 on the year following a 3-0 win at Washington on Sunday. Cal State Bakersfield, an NCAA Division I independent, falls to 5-10-2.

Next up for the Western Athletic Conference-leading Spartans is a return to league play at home against the rival Bulldogs of Fresno State this Friday night, October 30. The game is slated for a 5:00 p.m. start at Spartan Stadium, and will be the first half of a doubleheader with the men's team. The game, which also acts as the home finale, is Senior Night for seven members of the Spartan women's program.
