Women's soccer shut out by Santa Barbara; Nevada bests Vermont in Bay Area Classic

SAN JOSE, Calif.--The San Jose State University Spartans (2-5-0) were shut out, 3-0, by UC Santa Barbara (4-2-1) Sunday afternoon at Spartan Stadium. The victory for the Gauchos gave them first place in the third annual adidas Bay Area Classic. UCSB finished the two game tournament undefeated while the Spartans claimed second place by finishing 1-1. In the earlier match, Nevada beat Vermont 3-1 to secure third place.

Sunday’s contest stayed scoreless through the first 30 minutes until the Gauchos’ Krystal Sandza found a loose ball in the Spartan box and shot it in for the game's first goal. The goal was Sandza fourth of the tournament after collecting a hat trick in Friday’s win over Nevada. UC Santa Barbara would score twice more in the first ten-minutes of the second half to widen the lead and claim the victory.

The Spartans were outshot by the Gauchos for the game 24-9. San Jose State also out corner kicked 10-2.

San Jose State next game will be at Moraga on Tuesday for a 4:00pm match up with the St. Mary’s Gales.

Nevada tops Vermont, 3-1

Nevada (3-5-0) defeated Vermont (1-6-0), 3-1, in the early game on Sunday. Nevada scored in the 12th minute as Jessica Gregg connected with Kaula Rowe on a long lead pass. The Wolf Pack added another goal in the 38th minute off Annie Baxter.

Vermont would cut the lead in half as Sara Jablonski heading in a pass off a free kick to end the sutout.

Nevada added another goal after a Wolf Pack forward was fouled in the penalty box and awarded a penalty kick. Jessica Gregg made the kick to give the Wolf Pack a 3-1 win.

The win makes Nevada the third place team with a 1-1 record this weekend. Vermont went 0-2 for fourth place. San Jose State took second and UC Santa Barbara was the first place team with a 2-0 weekend.
