Women's soccer shutout by Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif.---The Santa Clara Broncos add more points to their tally in the rivalry series with San Jose State University after the Spartan women's soccer team lost, 5-0, in a non-conference match Tuesday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium.

The Spartans (2-8-5) held the defending national champion Broncos (9-3-1) scoreless for nearly 40 minutes before surrendering the first goal of the night. Leslie Osborne scored unassisted in the 39th minute which proved to be the game winner.

National team member Aly Wagner recorded two goals in the match including a penalty kick. Osborne finished the game with a goal and an assist and Bree Horvath notched two assists.

Erin Lavey made seven saves in the match on 21 shots faced for the Spartans. The Bronco goalkeepers did not face any shots and recorded no saves.

Santa Clara holds a 9-0 lead in the rivalry series after previously netting wins in men's soccer and volleyball this fall. The Spartans and Broncos will meet in 10 more competitions to determine the 2002-03 rivalry series champion. The next chance the Spartans have for points will come this weekend when the men's and women's cross country team meet Santa Clara at the Bronco Invitational Saturday morning.

San Jose State returns to Western Athletic Conference games this Friday when the team hosts Boise State in the first game of a soccer double header at Spartan Stadium. The women play at 5:00 p.m. and will be followed by the men who host Denver in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener at 7:30 p.m.
