Women's soccer blasts Boise State for first WAC win

San Jose, Calif.—The San Jose State University women’s soccer team picked up their first Western Athletic Conference victory, with a dominating, 4-1, win over the Broncos of Boise State Friday night at Spartan Stadium.

The Spartans (3-10-3 overall, 1-2-1 WAC) scored three times in the first half, with the games first two goals coming from junior forward Rebecca Hidalgo. Hidalgo’s first goal came in the 14th-minute when she headed in a cross from mid fielder Mariko Yoshihara. Her second goal came just under 20-minutes later when she found a loose ball at the top of the Broncos box, and as she was falling down, she booted it passed the Boise State (5-7-1 overall, 1-3-0 WAC) goalie for a 2-0 Spartan lead.

San Jose State’s third goal came when Christina Morrison’s perfectly placed pass, in the 41st minute, found an open Mariko Yoshihara and Yoshihara redirected the ball into the Bronco net for the half time score of 3-0.

In the second half each team was able to collect a goal. The Broncos put their first score of the night on the board in the 64th-minute when Tara Milligan passed the ball to a streaking Abbe Roche. Roche then kicked the ball around the charging Spartan goalkeeper, Erin Lavey, cutting the SJSU lead to 4-1.
With just under two minutes left to play the Spartans’ Jessica Korpela kicked in a loose ball that deflected of the Bronco goalie, sealing her team’s victory.

The Spartans next game is at Reno on Sunday, Oct. 20th against Nevada. Game time for the match up with the Wolf Pack is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
