Houston, Tex.-- The San Jose State University women’s soccer team gave up two second half goals, in its 3-1 loss to Rice University, October 6 at the Rice Track and Soccer Stadium.

The Spartans (2-7-3 overall, 0-1-1 WAC) conceded the first goal of the game to the Owls (1-7-2, overall, 1-1-0 WAC) in the 34th minute of the first half, but an Alaina Chandler goal midway through the second half evened the score at 1-1. Chandler’s goal came off a free kick by Alyson Ratzburg, the score was her first of the year.

With 12-minutes left in regulation and the score tied at 1-1, the Spartans were called for a hand ball in their own box giving Rice a penalty kick, and a chance to retake the lead. The Owls’ Kelly Potysman converted on the opportunity, giving her team a 2-1 lead and herself the fourth goal of the season. Rice would add another goal late in the second half, securing their first win in WAC play and on the season.

The Spartans were out shot in the game 17-9 by the Owls.

San Jose State returns to Spartan Stadium Friday, Oct. 11 for their WAC home opener, a 7:00 p.m. match up with UTEP.
