San Jose, Calif.----Four different players from San Jose State scored in the 4-0 shutout against Nevada on Friday night, October 22. San Jose State improves to 9-6-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the Western Athletic Conference, while Nevada falls to 6-9-2 and 1-5-0 in league play.
In a night honoring former San Jose State women's soccer superstar, Stacie Savage-Alberico, who will be enshrined in the San Jose State University Athletic Hall of Fame, the Spartans shutdown the Wolf Pack offense leaving them scoreless for the night. After an even 20 minutes of play, Kelsey Lord took a cross from Amanda Martin and dribbled the ball to the 10-yard mark, knocking it past goalkeeper Marie Cove for her team-leading eighth goal of the season. The Spartans were edged 10-7 in shot count in the first half.
The Spartans scored three times in the second half with goals from Jessica Ingram, Amanda Martin and Kayla Santacruz. Ingram knocked in her fourth goal of the season in the 51st minute on an assist from Lord. Nearly 15 minutes later, Amanda Martin scored off a Katie Knopp cross giving the Spartans a 3-0 advantage.
"It was a great ball," explained Amanda Martin on her goal. "We won the quick ball, I got the ball and took the shot, and then it went in really slowly."
The fourth and final goal of the night came from Kayla Santacruz in the 70th minute. Santacruz one-timed a pass from Knopp, pounding the ball through for her sixth goal of the season.
"We have been playing some good attacking soccer lately," added head coach Jeff Leightman. "I thought tonight in the second half, we really locked the match down defensively. It has been kind of our identity and who we are. Nevada is a dangerous team, and we did a great job keeping them out of the game."
Goalkeeper Meghan Maiwald finished the night with seven saves, completing her third shutout of the season. Maiwald and the Spartans are now 8-1-1 in the last ten matches.
San Jose State will host Utah State on Sunday, October 24 at 1:00 p.m.
