Davis, Calif.--Vanessa Afonso's goal in the 11th minute was all the offense San Jose State needed as the Spartans shut out UC Davis 1-0 Friday afternoon in a non-conference match at Aggie Field.

The shutout is third this season for the Spartans. It is the first shutout for goalie Erin Lavey this season. For the match, Lavey had to make just two saves in earning her first victory of the season.

Early on it was the Aggies who looked to score first as Sita Kuteira's blast from the inside the 18-yard box struck the crossbar before being cleared away by a Spartan defender. Minutes later, a long ball was sent to the middle of the field by the Spartans and it looked as though the Aggies would regain possession. Afonso ended up with the ball and after a few touches, cut back to the middle of the field where she launched a long shot from 25 yards out. The left-footed shot sailed just out of the reach of Aggie goalkeeper Krystyn Lizak and under the crossbar with the only score of the contest.

For the game the Aggies outshot the Spartans, 15-10, but managed just two shots on goal. UC Davis outshot SJSU 7-3 in the second half but came away empty. Aggie goalie Lizak finished the game with three saves.

San Jose State improved to 5-9-1 overall while UC Davis fell to 5-9-1. The Spartans host Hawaii this Sunday, October 24, at 6 p.m. in Spartan Stadium
