SAN JOSE - The San Jose State University women's soccer team clinched a berth in the upcoming Western Athletic Conference playoffs with a 2-1 victory over Fresno State at Spartan Stadium. The game was the final home game of the season for the Spartans.
Julie Brum scored two goals as the Spartans rallied from an early Fresno State goal to record their first win over the Bulldogs since 1996. The goals were the third and fourth of the season for Brum.
"This is a good way for us to go into WAC, to give us momentum," said SJSU interim head coach, referring to the conference playoffs.
Fresno State grabbed a 1-0 lead just 1:08 into the match when Jackie Jewell scored on a header following a corner kick. Virginia Jenkins and Jill Pearson were credited with assists on the play.
Brum tied the score at the 18:54 mark, also on a header off a corner kick from Kristina Jacob.
Brum's second goal was at the 64:11 mark. Brandy Apodaca's centering pass went to Karli Silveira, whose pass was deflected to Brum.
"Julie always comes up with big goals in big games," Grimes said.
The game was the final home game for six seniors, including Apodaca, Brum, Silveira, Jolene Keel, Rosie Madera and Jackie Ostdiek. "It's awesome for our seniors," said Grimes.
San Jose State concludes the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 31 with a 7:30 p.m. game at Santa Clara. The WAC Championships are scheduled for Nov. 2-5 in Fresno.
