Women's Soccer Falls To Hawai?i In Overtime, 2-1

Waipahu, O`ahuThe San Jose State women’s soccer team lost to the Hawai’i Rainbow Wahine, 2-1, in overtime at the Waipio Soccer Stadium in Waipahu, O`ahu on Sunday. The loss drops the Spartans (4-8-3, 1-2-0 WAC) into a tie for sixth place in the WAC with Louisiana Tech. Hawai’i (5-5-4, 1-1-1 WAC) moves into a three-way tie for third place in the conference.

The first half was played defensively as neither team was able to sustain much offense. Hawai’i offense consisted of four shots, all in the first 17 minutes. The Spartans were only able to get one shot off. Emmy Belding took the lone shot at the 22:45 mark, but Kori Lu, the Wahine keeper, made the save. Neither side had another chance to score in the first half and they went to the locker rooms tied at 0-0.

In the second half, Hawai’i got on the board in the 47th minute. Chelsea Deptula scored on a header off a corner by Taryn Fukuroku.

The Spartans came right back with equalizer at the 49:09 mark. Freshman defender Amanda Martin booted a high-long through ball to forward Emmy Belding who took the shot and beat the Rainbow Wahine keeper with a hard low blast.

Spartan keeper Nina Butera made four saves in the second half including two, in the 83rd and 84th minutes, to preserve the tie and send the match into overtime for the seventh time this year.

Hawai’i had the only shot of the overtime, a goal at 92:45 off a free kick by Taryn Fukuroku from outside the 18 yard box to give the Rainbow Wahine the, 2-1, win.

The Spartans were led offensively by Belding (2 shots, 2 on-goal, 1 goal) and Martin (1 assist). Michelle Haughey (1 shot, 1 on-goal) and Shanelle Furner (1 shot) also contributed.

In goal, Nina Butera made five saves and allowed two goals.

The Spartans return home to face Louisiana Tech on Friday, October 24 on Spartan Soccer Field. Kick off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
