Women's Soccer: Spartans Conclude Conference Play With Home Game Against Fresno State

This week: The San Jose State University women's soccer team hosts Fresno State Friday in the final Western Athletic Conference game of the season for the Spartans. The game begins at 7:30 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.

Records: San Jose State is 6-11-1 overall, 2-3-1 in the WAC. The Spartans are in sixth place in the conference standings.

Opponents/series record: Fresno State is tied for fourth in the conference with a 3-3 record, and is 9-7 overall. The Spartans trail in the all time series, 1-5-1. Last year the two teams played to a 0-0 double overtime time in Fresno. Fresno State defeated San Jose State, 1-0, at the WAC Championships in Dallas, Texas.

Last week: The Spartans lost to Saint Mary's, 1-0 in double overtime, in a non-league contest, then dropped a 3-1 decision to TCU and lost to SMU, 5-0, in Western Athletic Conference games. All three games were away games for the Spartans.

Shauna Reich scored at the 112:54 mark in the second overtime to give Saint Mary's a the 1-0 win over the Spartans last Tuesday (Oct. 10). SJSU goalkeeper Eryn Meyer recorded 14 saves.

Against TCU last Friday, Kristina Jacob scored on an assist from Jeane Sunseri 2:20 into the first half to give San Jose State the early lead. That lead held until late in the half, when TCU tied the score. The Horned Frogs scored twice in the second half for a 3-1 win.

On Sunday, SMU scored three second half goals to pull away for a 4-0 victory.

Conference playoff picture: San Jose State is one game ahead of Hawai'i for the sixth and final berth in the Western Athletic Conference Championships, which will be held Nov. 2-5 at Fresno State.

This is a possibility of a tie for sixth place, since the Spartans have one conference game left (Friday vs. Fresno State), while Hawai'i hosts TCU on Thursday and SMU on Sunday to compete its conference schedule.

A San Jose State win and a loss by UTEP to Tulsa (also on Friday) would vault the Spartans into fourth place in the final conference standings.
