San Jose-For the first time in school history, the San Jose State women's soccer team shut out Fresno State, 2-0, Sunday afternoon in a Western Athletic Conference match at Spartan Stadium.

Spartan goalie Adrienne Herbst showed why she was named last week's WAC Defensive Player of the Week as she recorded her second shut out of the season. Herbst made seven saves in the win, including two key saves against Bulldog Cortney Sobrero denying scoring chances.

Freshman Tasha VanDixhorn scored San Jose State's first goal at 23:35. She shot at the south goal of the stadium from 35 yards out. The shot split the defenders and Bulldog goalie Jeannette Paine could not make the save as the ball found the back of the net.

San Jose State held off many scoring chances by Fresno State in the second half before the Spartans sealed the match at 87:03. Nicole Irwin dribbled into the box and took a shot from the left side which found the back of the net. Kristin Krale and Vanessa Afonso assisted on the goal. Afonso also had a chance to score in the last minute of the match, but the ball hit the right post and bounced back onto the playing field.

“This was a big win for the program,” said San Jose State head coach Dave Siracusa. “I am very proud of this team and the way they played together for the entire match.”

San Jose State improves to 4-9-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the WAC, while Fresno State is now 4-7-3 overall and 1-2-2 in the WAC. The Spartans play at UC Davis Friday afternoon at 2 p.m., before hosting Hawaii next Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.
